The Lioness showed who the queen is now.
Sports betting enthusiasts and betting websites expected the UFC 207 headliner to be a war; instead what they’ve witnessed is a total domination from the reigning Women’s Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.
Indeed, betting odds quickly crashed as Nunes destroyed and overshadowed the once biggest and brightest star of the UFC franchise with her precise and powerful punches.
The 28-year-old Brazilian striker needed only 48 seconds to finish Ronda Rousey and tell the whole mixed martial arts community that they’ve got a new and dominant champion.
Nunes launched a barrage of punches right from the opening frame to throw Rousey off her feet, and the former champion never recovered from that as the Lioness devoured her with right hands along the fence. Referee Herb Dean immediately stopped the fight despite a protest from Rowdy.
It also didn’t help Rousey that she didn’t show any defence against a fighter known for her striking prowess.
It was ugly, brutal and, perhaps, saddening as Rousey intended to redeem herself after losing the title in a surprising defeat to Holly Holm at UFC 193. However, after a 13-month absence, she was no longer the fighter she once was, while Nunes proved to be a beast on a completely different level.
Immediate post-fight statistics showed that Nunes landed 27 strikes, all of which were significant. On the other hand, Rousey only managed to connect seven of her 14 strikes. She also failed to take the fight on the ground, disappointing her fans who were expecting to see her signature armbar.
“I stop it like that. When I asked for this fight I know everything. I prepare in my mind, my spirit and body for this moment. I know Ronda Rousey is bigger. I know they love Ronda Rousey. But no one is taking this belt from me,” Nunes said after her lopsided victory.
After such a shocking loss, we might have already seen the last of Rousey, but UFC fans have something to look forward to as Nunes seemed to be only starting her conquest of the women’s division.
Sure enough, a new year might also be the beginning of a new era for the UFC.
“This is amazing. Before I walk out, we talked because this moment is my moment. She had her time. She did a lot for this sport. Thank you, Ronda Rousey … I’m the champion, the Lion!”
