Werder Bremen vs Borussia Monchengladbach
It’s not an exaggeration to say that the first half of this year’s Bundesliga has been one of the most interesting periods of time that has happened in the German top flight for quite some time.
Borussia Dortmund are on the top of the Bundesliga while Bayern Munich are trying to get back to their rightful place after stumbling during the last couple of months. Moreover, the top eight places of the league are separated by only a couple of points. A few Bundesliga 2018 results could easily change how the table looks like.
Der Klassiker is undoubtedly the game of the weekend. However, the duel between Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach is the most interesting. Gladbach are currently ahead of the defending champions on goal difference while Bremen are at the final Europe spot. An unfavourable result for either side could result in both of them skidding down the table, making this an important match to play.
Which side will triumph at the Weserstadion? Let’s figure out.
Talking Points
The Bremen Crowd Want More Eggestein!
It’s quite surprising to a couple of German football fans how strongly Bremen have started their season thus far. Just a season ago, Die Werderaner were right in the middle of the league, winning 10 and drawing 13 of their games. It was just surprising for many to see just how much the squad has grown over the summer.
However, I think the rapid improvement they have enjoyed in the first 10 games of the season can be attributed to one man: Maximilian Eggestein.
The 21-year-old from Hannover is having a roaring start to his season. He has scored four goals and garnered Man of the Match honours in his ten starts for the club. The fact that he is the club’s high scorer becomes all the more impressive when we consider the fact that he is usually the right-central midfielder in Florian Kohfeldt’s 4-3-3 formation.
His long shots from the edge of the penalty box and his crisp passes has made him an indispensable presence in the side. He has become so good for Bremen that some are even calling for Joachim Low to cap him for the country’s next international competitions.
Of course, we have to remember that Bremen have lost their last two league games, one of which was a humiliation done by Bayer Leverkusen at their own home. However, this year’s Bremen midfield is as solid as ever and should have no problems in mounting a decent challenge to the second-placed Monchengladbach.
Gladbach Want to Keep the Good Times Going
I cannot emphasise how many of Borussia Monchengladbach’s fans feel ecstatic about the way things are going for their squad as of late. They have been playing fantastic football as of late, and fans can only dream that this run of form continues throughout the season.
Their season has had a couple of highs and lows, the lows being mind-boggling defeats to Freiburg and Hertha Berlin away from home. However, their victories and draws have been just as impressive. Their 0-3 decimation of Bayern at the Allianz Arena is one fans have been talking about for days on end.
Their successes on the pitch can be directly pointed to the players on the pitch. Thorgan Hazard, Jonas Hofmann and Lars Stindl have been playing out of their skins this season, and Alassane Plea has been a worthwhile investment on Dieter Hecking’s end.
If they want to end the season at the top, Gladbach must-win games against interesting opponents such as Bremen.
History
Bremen and Gladbach have played 99 football games prior to their weekend clash, making this centennial match a must-win for footballing and sentimental reasons. The hosts have won 40 of their games, but Gladbach aren’t far behind with their 37 victories.
However, recent head-to-head results point to a Gladbach victory. Four out of their last five matches were secured by Die Fohlen in fairly comfortable fashion. However, the latest result was a high-scoring affair as both sides got two goals apiece.
Betting Tip
Werder Bremen vs Borussia Monchengladbach | Borussia Monchengladbach Asian Handicap +0.25 @ 1.83 | |
November 10, 22:30 |
It wouldn’t be bad to back Werder Bremen as bookies like SBOBET gave them the small advantage in their Bundesliga 2018 odds over their guests. However, their last two forays against Bundesliga competition have been pretty successful. Given how they lost horribly against Leverkusen and Mainz, I doubt that they will be able to win against their guests without struggling a fair bit.
While Gladbach haven’t had the perfect stint after defeats to Freiburg and Leverkusen, they have managed to bounce back with an impressive home win against Fortuna Dusseldorf. I don’t think the quality possessed by Gladbach can be stopped by Bremen’s defence.
