Euro 2020: Spain and Sweden Battle for Top Spot

Spain vs Sweden

The Euro 2020 qualifiers are back on this weekend and, on Monday, the tie of the round takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu where Spain hosts Sweden in a Group F blockbuster clash.

It’s a battle for top spot in Group F. Spain is top with three wins from three, while Sweden is in second place on seven points, three ahead of nearest rivals Romania.  Only five places separate these two teams in the FIFA World rankings, with Spain in ninth, somewhat lower than they are used to, and Sweden in 14th.

Both arrive in Catalonia on the back of comfortable wins, but we expect Luis Enrique’s Spain to dominate this game in front of a passionate home crowd. After a disappointing World Cup in Russia La Furia Roja has a debt to pay its fans and Sweden will have a tough job to stop them on Monday.

We have a jam packed schedule at SBOBET football this summer, with the Women’s World Cup and the Copa America to enjoy, and plenty of Euro 2020 updates as the qualification campaigns are in full swing.

So let’s take a closer look at Spain and Sweden.

Talking Points

Spain is on the up

The UEFA Nations League was not a happy experience for Spain, finishing bottom in a group containing World Cup semi-finalists England and Croatia. And the World Cup was a disappointment after head coach Julen Lopetegui left just two days before a ball was kicked. But the Euro 2020 betting tips will be keeping a close eye on Spain after an encouraging start to this qualifying campaign.

Sergio Ramos shatters world record for most wins in international football after beating Faroe Islands in Euro 2020
Spain’s Sergio Ramos celebrates after scoring their first goal against Faroe islands

La Furia Roja registered its third win in Group F with a 1-4 romp away to Faroe Islands; with two players rolling back the years. Santi Cazorla made his first appearance in over four years while Jesus Navas scored his first in six. Skipper Sergio Ramos was on target too, and he’s homing in on Iker Casillas’ record 167 caps for Spain, Ramos has 163.

Chelsea’s Kepa was preferred in goal to David de Gea in the Faroe Islands, but it will be interesting to see if Manchester United’s want away keeper gets the nod, in front of a Catalan crowd which would be unsympathetic due to his likely move to Real Madrid.

But it’s up front where Spain needs to get it right against a Sweden side which can be tough to break down. Enrique is likely to start with current top scorer Alvaro Morata, he has 15 goals in 30 international appearances; and he could be alongside Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas to form a potent front three.

Solid Sweden

Jan Andersson has built a well organised Sweden, built on a formidable defence and with the ability to strike on the break.

The Biagult performed well in the UEFA Nations League, winning promotion to the A League and they are a team to be reckoned with, having reached the World Cup quarter-finals in Russia, only to be beaten by Gareth Southgate’s England.

They are a determined bunch, winning their final two games of the Nations League to win the group and guarantee a play-off spot for Euro 2020. The way they have started they may not need that fall back option, particularly if they can spring a surprise in Barcelona.

Striker Viktor Claessen was on target in the 3-0 win over Malta and RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg will be a constant threat on either wing.

But I expect the busiest man to be goalkeeper Robin Olsen. The Roma man was one of the stars of Sweden’s World Cup run.

History

This is the first meeting between these two teams in a while. Spain has won three and Sweden two of the last five meetings, the most recent being a 2-1 win for Spain in the Euro 2008 Round of 16

That was the beginning of La Furia Roja’s golden age, when they won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup

Sweden’s best ever performance came in the 1958 World Cup, which they hosted and reached the final, only to be beaten by Brazil. They reached the semi-finals in the USA in 1994, finishing third, and two years after reaching the semi-finals of the European Championships, hosted in Sweden.

Both teams come into the game in good form. After back to back Nations league defeats to Croatia and England, Spain has recovered to win four on the run, while Sweden is unbeaten in the last six, winning four and drawing two.
