Premier League: New North West Challenge for Norwich!

Burnley vs Norwich City

Another week, another test; and the next one for new boys Norwich is a visit to the hostile cauldron of Burnley’s Turf Moor.

But the Canaries arrive in high spirits having just beaten Burnley’s billionaire neighbours, Manchester City, so as they pass the Etihad en route to Lancashire they can seek inspiration from that recent memory.

Premier League, Burnley vs Norwich City is one of the most attractive fixtures of the weekend, two teams scoring freely and each with great team spirit in its camp. Daniel Farke pioneered cavalier, free-flowing football to lift the Canaries out of the Championship, while Sean Dyche is gradually adding flair to the toughest group of players in the league.

Talking Points

Barnes vs Pukki

They cost £450,000 between them, but Burnley’s Ashley Barnes and Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki are two of the hottest properties in the Premier League right now. With ten goals between them (Barnes four and Pukki six), no players have had more shots than these two, both letting fly 16 times in their five games so far. One if not both of these will be main players in the Burnley vs Norwich City highlights.

Pukki has been a revelation since his arrival at Carrow Road last season. No-one outside Finland or East Anglia knew who he was…but they do now!

The deadly Fin made history by becoming the first Norwich City player to win the Premier League Player of the Month for August, seeing off Barnes in the process. More illustrious names were on the shortlist, but Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Roberto Firmino also fell behind Pukki. It’s interesting that Manchester City had three names up there!

But Burnley’s combative striker has also made a great start to the season and he’s no flash in the pan, well on the way to hitting double figures for a third successive Premier League season. There are very few strikers Burnley fans would swap their ‘Aye Aye Ashley’ for.

New Boys must make a quick start to survive

Norwich City’s stunning win over Manchester City shocked the football world, but the most important thing for Daniel Farke was the three points. And the victory over the champions will be scant consolation if their survival campaign ends in tears. I’m not saying it will, but history tells us one or two of the new boys will make a swift return to the Championship, and success depends on getting points on the board early. Huddersfield Town did that in their first season in the top flight and survived by the skin of their teeth.

Six points from five games is a good start, but the Canaries ideally need to hit the 25 mark before the end of 2019, and despite their fantastic win against the Sky Blues, points are hard to come by, especially at places like Turf Moor. The latest Burnley vs Norwich City betting odds point to a home win, and Farke would be more than happy with another point.

Team news

Burnley winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson is back to fitness and he could come in for Aaron Lennon but might face competition from Jeff Hendrick, who climbed off the bench to save a point against Brighton.

Norwich’s influential midfielder Moritz Leitner is doubtful with a calf problem and he would be a big miss if unavailable to play.

History

This is the Clarets’ third home game of the season, after dismantling Southampton they suffered a 0-3 home defeat to league leaders Liverpool.

The Canaries have won two and lost three and so sit a point above their hosts on six points. The head to heads are nicely balanced. The Clarets have won nine to Norwich’s seven victories, and there have been three draws in all meetings since 2000.

The last league meeting was a 2-1 win for Burnley back in 2011; and Turf Moor hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Canaries, without a win in five visits, and this season they have lost all three away matches.

Betting Tip

??
Burnley vs Norwich City 2-3 goals @ 1.93
September 21, 22:00 (GMT+8)

The Clarets will fancy this game but will be well aware of the danger Norwich presents.

Burnley is at 2.01 with the draw and an away win both at SBOBET odds of 3.50. Both teams have a cutting edge and I think there will be goals, but I suspect the home side will have the edge with an experienced Premier League defence and a loud home crowd.

A repeat of the last meeting here, a 2-1 home win is available at 7.80.
