RB Leipzig, BVB Set for Last Big Bundesliga Showdown

RB Leipzig vs Borussia Dortmund

This Bundesliga season looked as if it could have a three-horse title race, with both RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund threatening to mount a serious challenge to Bayern Munich’s run of dominance.

But both sides could not quite manage to keep up with Bayern, who have already clinched their eighth consecutive championship.

With the title wrapped up, Leipzig and Dortmund are now set to square off in the biggest game left on the Bundesliga calendar.

Leipzig would love to end a once-promising season on a high, but Dortmund will be determined to cement their place as the second-best team in the country.

Talking Points

Leipzig’s disastrous dip in 2020

RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga 2020 betting odds to win the title were looking fairly good during the first half of the season. They were ‘winter champions’ after topping the table heading into the winter break, mainly thanks to the brilliance of striker Timo Werner and new coach Julian Nagelsmann.

But for some reason, the Red Bulls’ Bundesliga 2020 results declined in a hurry. They would win just three of their first eight matches back from the winter break, with four draws and one defeat.

The long pause in play due to the pandemic didn’t solve many of their problems, either. Since returning to action, they’ve drawn three and won three of their six matches.

All three of those draws have come at home, where they have struggled all season long. Before their match against Fortuna Dusseldorf, Leipzig had won just seven of their 15 home matches, with seven draws and one loss.

They failed to capitalise on winnable matches against Freiburg, Hertha, and Paderborn, and they didn’t help themselves by having a man sent off in each of the latter two matches.

And now there’s looming drama about star striker Werner, who is reportedly ready to skip out on Leipzig’s on-going Champions League campaign to prepare for his move to Chelsea.

Bundesliga: Timo Werner hasn't scored at Red Bull Arena since mid-January

Werner’s goalscoring form has gone down significantly in the second half of the season, and he hasn’t scored at Red Bull Arena since bagging a brace against Union Berlin in mid-January.

However, it should be noted that Leipzig have held their own against their top rivals this season. They’ve gone unbeaten in seven meetings against the rest of the top five — Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Bayer Leverkusen — with six draws and a win.

Dortmund have key weapons back

Borussia Dortmund did all they could to make the title race as interesting as possible. They’ve won nine of their last 10 matches and five of their first six since returning to Bundesliga action.

Unfortunately, though, the one match they didn’t win was their loss was at home against Bayern, which effectively ended any chance they had of overthrowing the champions.

They are yet to play Mainz at the time of writing, but they are widely expected to collect three more points at home against the relegation strugglers.

Although, Dortmund haven’t been nearly as impressive in their last two outings, both of which they won 1-0. They barely beat a much improved Hertha Berlin side at home and needed a 95th-minute winner from Erling Haaland to overcome relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf away.

However, Haaland’s return after a two-match absence due to a knee injury should help massively. The teenager has been phenomenal since arriving in January with 11 goals in his first 12 games for BVB.

Meanwhile, captain Marco Reus is back in training and could be available to play a prominent role in the penultimate match of the season.

After a rough start, Dortmund have significantly turned their away form around in 2020. They’ve won six of their seven away from home since returning from the winter break, including the last five on the bounce.

History

Leipzig and Dortmund haven’t had too many meetings as Leipzig only made it to the Bundesliga in 2016. But those matchups between the two sides have been highly competitive.

Dortmund have the slight edge with three wins to Leipzig’s two, with two draws. But after Leipzig won two of their first three matches, Dortmund have gone unbeaten in their last four meetings, with two wins and two draws.

They probably should have won a third earlier this year as they ran out to a 2-0 lead over Leipzig at home. But Leipzig battled back with Timo Werner scoring a brace, then equalised again when Jadon Sancho brought BVB back ahead in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Betting Tip

??
RB Leipzig vs Borussia Dortmund Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap +0.25 @ 1.84
June 20, 21:30 (GMT+8)

SBOBET odds have RB Leipzig favoured slightly at 2.38 to pick up a home win, with Borussia Dortmund priced at 2.87 to continue their winning run away from home. A draw is 3.30, which is certainly enticing since most of Leipzig’s meetings with other top clubs this season have ended in stalemates.

But Dortmund have a legitimate shot at winning in Leipzig, which is why Asian Handicap is the way to go. Even if they don’t end up beating the Red Bulls, a draw would still be good enough to win the bet of Dortmund +0.25.
