La Liga: Roll up for the Madrid Derby!

Getafe vs Real Madrid

Who fancies a Madrid Derby to start the New Year? Sounds good; and we have a fascinating clash on Sunday to get the Spanish league up and running again.

It’s not Atleti vs Real but no matter; the Colisium Alphonso Perez will be the venue for La Liga: Getafe vs Real Madridand the hosts will give their famous neighbours a tough game. Prior to the winter break, Real Madrid avoided a slip up against Athletic Bilbao to move eight points clear of the chasing pack, while Getafe picked up three vital points thanks to a win over Osasuna which lifted them out of the bottom three.

There’s plenty to play for at both ends of the table and this clash is not a foregone conclusion…

Talking Points

Los Blancos just need to keep winning

At SBOTOP odds of 1.10, Real Madrid are out there on their own with yet another league title getting closer by the week, and it will take a monumental effort from someone to haul them in. Sevilla at a price of 9.00, Atletico Madrid at 17.00 and even Barcelona, dreaming again since the arrival of Xavi, are not completely out of it at 37.00…but almost. The Blaugrana trails their Clasico rivals by 18 points and I just can’t see Los Blancos losing that many.

At a price of 1.25 to finish the season as top scorer, Karim Benzema is on fire. He bagged an early brace as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao, 2-1, just before the winter break; and that makes it 15 for the season for the Frenchman. If he matches that tally in the second half of the season then it’s a done deal and the title will head back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Getafe fighting for their top flight lives

In contrast to their illustrious hosts Getafe are in a relegation scrap and at a precarious price of 2.20 to take the drop. Since their promotion to the Primera Division, back in 2017, Los Azulones have faired well, with three top half finishes, including a fifth place in the 2018/19 campaign. But last term they finished 15th and the club has continued its slide, currently a position lower and only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

But results more recently have been better, they are unbeaten in five and come into the game on the back of a 1-0 victory over Osasuna, as striker Dario Poveda climbed off the bench to score his first goal of the season with a 93rd minute header. Wing back Damian Suarez provided the cross and Real Madrid will have to keep an eye out for the experienced Uruguayan. Alongside, him Serbian centre back Stefan Mitrovic has been a key figure in the Getafe defence and he’ll have his work cut out on Sunday.

Head coach Quique Sanchez Flores has been here before. He cut his teeth as a youth coach at Real Madrid, before managing La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and Valencia. He’s a well travelled guy, managing Premier League club Watford for two stints and this is his third time a head coach of Getafe, previously in 2005 and 2015.

He will be determined to keep Getafe’s unbeaten run going and after their 15th place finish last season, Los Azulones would take that outcome again; right now.

History

Can Real Madrid maintain their good defence in their upcoming La Liga match against Getafe even without Thibaut Courtois?
Real Madrid have ruled out Thibaut Courtois in their clash against Getafe after he tested positive for COVID-19

The stats, recent and distant, are in the league leaders’ favour. Los Blancos have won 24 of the 33 head to head Getafe vs Real Madrid results,in all competitions since 2004, while Los Azulones have managed five victories and four draws.

Two of the last three meetings, at the Colisium Alphonso Perez, have ended in goalless draws, while Madrid won the other. The most recent encounter was a 0-0 stalemate in April as Thibaut Courtois made a series of fine saves to hold off Getafe and to keep Los Blancos in the hunt for the title, at that moment three points behind Atletico Madrid with seven games to play.

In terms of recent form Los Blancos have won five and drawn one of the last six, while Getafe have won two drawn three and lost just once; but this is their biggest test so far. Real Madrid are unbeaten in 15 and have an away record of eight wins, one draw and one defeat.

Betting Tip

??
Getafe vs Real MadridTotal Goals 2-3 @ 1.90
January 2, 21:00 (GMT+8)

The pre-match Getafe vs Real Madrid betting oddshint that this could be a tough challenge for Los Blancos. Odds of 1.76 on an away victory tell us this is by no means a walk in the park, while Getafe at 4.36 and the draw priced at 3.35 are certainly worth looking at.

For a long shot alternative; a correct score line of 1-1 at odds of 5.99, or a 1-2 win for Real Madrid at 6.56 shouldn’t be too far wide of the mark.
