We are up for a rematch as Olympiacos host SC Freiburg in this year’s UEFA Europa League Group stages!

These two clubs met each other in last year’s Europa League group stages, where Freiburg got the upper hand, beating Olympiacos 3-0 on aggregate.

The Thyrlos decimated Serbian club Cukaricki 6-1in a double-header, which secured their spot in the UEFA Europa League, Group A. They aim to avenge their loss last year against a small but formidable top-flight German club and make a deep run this year.

Freiburg have high ambitions this year and are looking to produce better results after reaching the last 16 in last year’s Europa League. The German side will come into this match with great confidence, as they’ve won all of their last three matches against Olympiacos throughout all competitions.

Giulian Biancone suits up for Olympiacos

Biancone has finalised his transfer to the Thyrlos. After playing just three matches with his former club Nottingham Forest, who are also owned by Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, the 23-year-old defender aims to bolster Olympiacos’ defence and help the Greek club make strides this year.

The young Frenchman will aim to bounce back after suffering a severe knee injury in training, which forced him to sit out the rest of the 2022-23 season. Biancone has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Forest and started the 3-0 win at Grimsby in the EFL Cup.

Olympiacos are poised to have their best Europa League performance in recent club history. They have yet to advance to the quarter-finals in the last 10 years. They’ve reached the last 16 four times since the 2011-12 campaign.

With their early form this year, Thyrlos are in good shape to make a deep run and produce respectable Europa League 2023 results.

Freiburg scuffling early in Bundesliga

Fiery Freiburg have now lost two in a row in the Bundesliga. They showed terrific performances in the first two games of the season, where they beat Hoffenheim in PreZero Arena, then Werder at home.

But that’s where things started to go sideways for Christian Streich and his club. In their third game of the league season, Freiburg got scorched by Stuttgart in MHPArena. Stuttgart were firing from all cylinders. Chris Fuhrich and Serhou Guirassy netted two goals apiece, then Enzo Millot capped it off with a beautiful left-footed strike to end the game 5-0.

It was not much of a different story when they hosted the undefeated Dortmund in Stade Europa-Park  on September 16. Compared to their outing against Stuttgart, this match was a little more competitive. The fixture ended with a 4-2 scoreline as Hummels led the charge with two goals to give Dortmund the win.

Multiple players have contributed goals for the team, which is always a good sign. Roland Sallai, Maximillian Philipp, Lucas Holer, and Nicolas Hofler have produced goals for Freiburg.

History

Olympiacos and Freiburg will meet in the Europa League group stages for the second consecutive season. During their last outing, the German club dominated Olympiacos 3-0.

Records show that Olympiacos struggle in the Europa League, garnering zero wins in their last nine matches in the tournament. To make things more complicated for the Greek club, they’ve seemed to struggle against German teams in UEFA European games, winning just one out of 11 matches.

Freiburg managed to secure a spot in the last 16 during last year’s Europa League. They were eliminated by Juventus with a steady 3-0 aggregate score, sending the Old Lady to the last eight. Freiburg looked helpless against the Italian Giants last year, failing to score a single goal. Freiburg had scored in all of their Europa League matches going into fixture against Juventus.

I personally think that Olympiacos show value where they are priced for this match. Given their recent form in Super League Greece, it is a close call for them to be underdogs against Freiburg, who are 10^th in the Budesliga and have lost two matches in a row.

Olympiacos have been on a tear in Super League Greece. They’ve yet to lose a match and have won three of their last four games. They’ve also found themselves at the top of their league table, doing so in an emphatic fashion, scoring 11 goals in the process.
