Fiorentina shocked the Bianconeri at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, taking all three points to blow the title race wide open again.
Roma and Napoli both won and the gap at the top has been cut to a single point, while the betting odds on a Roma triumph continue to creep downwards.
Juventus’ march to a sixth successive Serie A title hasn’t necessarily hit the skids, but a second defeat in six games has given online betting fans food for thought.
Fiorentina 2-1 Juventus
Goals from Nikola Kalinic and Milan Badelj either side of half time rocked the Old Lady and cut the lead at the top while lifting the Viola to eighth in the table. Gonzalo Higuain stabbed the ball home to halve the deficit, but the home side held out pretty comfortably.
Udinese 0-1 Roma
What a result that was for Luciano Spalletti’s Roma, negotiating a difficult game against Udinese and protecting a 12th-minute lead, courtesy of Radja Nainggolan for the rest of the game. Edin Dzeko could have made it more relaxing six minutes later but blasted his penalty closer to the floodlights than the net.
Napoli 3-1 Pescara
The league’s top scorers were the only chasing team with, on paper, an easy game and Marek Hamsik ruthlessly put bottom club Pescara to the sword, scoring one. Lorenzo Tonelli and Dries Mertens, with his 12th of the season, piled on the agony. Gianluca Caprari notched a late consolation, but the win moves Napoli to within four points of the top.
Lazio 2-1 Atalanta
Just one point and a single place further back, Lazio won this crucial match against an Atalanta side which was rampant until a month ago. And the visitors took the lead through an Andrea Petagna header. But Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s equaliser and Ciro Immobile’s penalty brought the points home.
Torino 2-2 Milan
Tuesday’s game finished the weekend in style when Andrea Belotti and Marco Benassi gave Torino a healthy half-time lead. Adem Ljajic could have made it three but missed from the spot. And 2-0 can be a perilous score line as Andrea Bertolacci proved when he pegged one back and Carlos Bacca confirmed from the spot to make it 2-2.
Inter 3-1 Chievo
Inter’s rise continued, and they moved into sixth place with a fifth win on the bounce. The red hot Mauro Icardi and Ivan Peresic were both on target as Inter came back firing, having gone in at the break one down to a Sergio Pellissier strike. Eder added a late third for impressive Inter to consign Chievo to a third consecutive league defeat.
Cagliari 4-1 Genoa
A 28th-minute goal for Genoa’s Giovanni Simeone served only to awaken the hosts, and Cagliari hit back with strikes from Marco Borriello and Joao Pedro to turn it round by the break. Borriello added a second before Diego Farias made it four from the spot and Cagliari are up to 10th.
Sampdoria 0-0 Empoli
One point was enough to lift the visitors eight points above the drop zone. But it could have been so much better had Levan Mchedlidze converted a penalty. Empoli have scored only 11 goals all season and you can see why! Sampdoria, without a win in five, are 13th.
Crotone 0-1 Bologna
Bologna are one place back in 14th and now with a 13-point cushion to the bottom three. Blerim Dzemaili fired low into the corner from distance, and while Mattia Destro threatened a second, one was enough. Crotone remains one of the three in terrible trouble.
Sassuolo 4-1 Palermo
And Palermo is another as the Sicilians went one up through Robin Quaison before promptly capitulating to an out-of-form Sassuolo side. Alessandro Matri bagged a double, and Antonino Ragusa and Matteo Politano joined the party for the happy hosts.
