Ligue 1: One Down and Two More for PSG?

PSG are hopeful that winning this year’s Ligue 1 title is the first step to completing a historic treble, with the Coupe de France final and a Champions League semi-final to look forward to in the next few weeks of the 2023–24 campaign.

With Kylian Mbappe reportedly leaving the club this summer and likely joining Real Madrid, his time in Paris is slowly coming to a close, so winning two more trophies, particularly the Champions League, is the perfect parting gift for his supporters.

Fortunately for the Parisiens, they have the requisite talent to see this through, although that is not enough to win trophies. Needless to say, May is going to make or break their season.

PSG successfully complete Ligue 1 title defence

For PSG, winning Ligue 1 is the absolute minimum. And they succeeded in doing so following last weekend’s Ligue 1 2024 results, when they drew 3-3 with Le Havre and AS Monaco lost 1-0 to Lille.

With a 12-point lead at the top of the table and three games remaining, AS Monaco can no longer catch up with PSG, even if the latter loses all of their remaining league games and the former wins all of theirs.

However, PSG’s performance against Le Havre leaves a lot to be desired, given their gap in the French top-flight standings. Le Havre are fighting for their lives to maintain their top-flight status because they’re the 15th seed, and they improved their SBOTOP Ligue 1 2024 odds when they got a big point from the reigning and defending champions.

Le Havre got off to a 2-1 lead when Christopher Operi and Andre Ayew outscored Bradley Barcola. And when Abdoulaye Toure converted his penalty to go up 3-1, it looked like PSG’s coronation was about to be delayed.

But the Parisiens were not to be denied, as Achraf Hakimi and Goncalo Ramos scored two late goals, and that was all she wrote.

PSG got the job done in France by securing their 12th Ligue 1 title. But more importantly, they were able to give Kylian Mbappe an additional night off as they look ahead to their upcoming Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

PSG meet an old nemesis in the Coupe de France final

PSG will have to go through a resurgent Lyon squad if they are to win their 15th Coupe de France trophy. The good news for Luis Enrique’s side is that they’ve already beaten Lyon in the league twice this season, both via 4-1 scorelines.

Their most recent meeting happened last week, with Kylian Mbappe not on the squad list once again. PSG jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Nemanja Matic had an own goal, while Lucas Beraldo and Goncalo Ramos also made the net bulge.

Ernest Nuamah pegged one back for Lyon, but Goncalo Ramos completed his brace to secure the victory as early as the first half.

The loss against PSG is a setback for Lyon, and many believe that they cannot beat them in the Coupe de France final on May 25. However, the fact that Lyon have gotten this far after the chaos they’ve been through is already a huge achievement in itself.

Pierre Sage deserves a ton of credit for righting Lyon’s ship because they’ve improved from 18th in the league to eighth, putting them in a position to compete for a European football spot next season.

Alexandre Lacazette has been the brightest spot for Lyon this season, tallying 16 goals and one assist. However, if Lyon are going to beat PSG, the former Arsenal man will need help from the likes of Ernest Nuamah, Said Benrahma, and Malick Fofana up front.

PSG are deep in the Champions League

Even if PSG win a double, their efforts will go to naught, at least in the front office’s eyes, if they won’t be able to win the Champions League yet again.

PSG are coming off a tough quarter-finals against Barcelona, and the hope is that surviving that matchup will give them the confidence to finally go all the way.

Because of his fair share of shortcomings in the past, all eyes are going to be on Kylian Mbappe for the Parisiens to see this through since he is the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals.

They will be up against Borussia Dortmund, who are by no means an easy team to deal with, but the odds are in their favour to advance to the final, where they’ll take on either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
