Leicester City 3-1 Liverpool
So they boot out Claudio Ranieri, the man who brought them the most amazing success at betting odds of 5001.00. And, as a result, the club which usually plays its football games at the bottom end of the Premier League must cope with reality.
And boy how they coped tonight, playing in the first half with the same intensity and sheer effort which brought them that incredible success. Given the events of this last week, it made for a rather uncomfortable viewing for the neutral… but the Leicester fans didn’t mind. Liverpool looked out of sorts, and the Foxes were first to most balls in the first half; and while the Reds probed and prodded, they were undone by two very direct strikes.
First, Jamie Vardy latched on to a rapid through ball to fire home for his sixth goal of the season. And as Liverpool began to step up their effort to equalise, Danny Drinkwater met a clearance with a stunning volley from 25 yards to make it, unbelievably, two.
Liverpool came out for the second half with greater purpose and dominated possession, but were susceptible to the break and it was Vardy again who punished the Reds, heading home on the hour.
The visitors finally broke through when Philippe Coutinho finished off the best move of the match on 68 minutes. It made for a nervy last quarter, but the home fans could soon enough breathe a sigh of relief.
This was more like the Leicester of last season, beating haughtier opposition with spirit and breathtaking cut and thrust. If they carry on like this, they’ll get the points they need to survive.
But the Foxes aren’t really good enough to play when they want. Shame they waited until Claudio was sacked before they realised.
