Serie A: Napoli are Making a Run at the Top

Napoli vs Monza

Surprise package Torino may be on top of the Serie A standings after the first five matchdays of the 2024-25 campaign, but they might find it difficult to hold on, depending on this weekend’s Serie A 2024 results.

AC Milan are level with Torino in points with 11 points apiece, while Napoli and Udinese are right behind them with 10 points each.

With that said, one of the top games to look forward to is between Napoli and Monza at the Diego Maradona Stadium on Sunday, as this is I Partenopei’s opportunity to reclaim the top spot with a victory.

While Napoli are doing well under Antonio Conte, the same can’t be said for Alessandro Nesta’s Monza, who are 19th in the table with only three points.

Talking Points

Ex-Manchester United stars doing their damage for Napoli

After a shocking opening day defeat against Hellas Verona, Napoli went on a four-game unbeaten run in Serie A, which saw them record nine goals while only conceding one on the other end.

Antonio Conte can owe his early success to the team’s revamped attack, as Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Romelu Lukaku, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Giovanni Simeone, and Alessandro Buongiorno have all found the back of the net in the league so far, while David Neres has three assists.

Lukaku had his best years with Conte when the two of them were at Inter Milan, winning the Scudetto in 2020-21, and now they’re on a mission to bring Napoli back to European football next year.

After dropping points against Juventus, Napoli annihilated Serie B side Palermo 5-0 to advance to the Coppa Italia Round of 16. Cyril Ngonge bagged a brace, while Juan Jesus, David Neres, and Scott McTominay all had one goal each.

Scott McTominay, for whom Napoli paid around £25 million to make his transfer happen this summer, had been getting plaudits from the Italian media.

The box-to-box midfielder was described as a man amongst boys during their 0-0 draw against Juventus, and it’s good to see him hit the target on Thursday.

Midweek win could give Monza a boost

Monza haven’t had the winning feeling in quite some time. The Biancorossi came so close several times, especially against Inter Milan and Fiorentina, but it wasn’t meant to be because they couldn’t close those matches out.

And after losing 2-1 to Bologna last weekend, Monza badly needed a pick-me-up, and they got it via a 3-1 over Brescia to advance to the Coppa Italia Round of 16.

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos, Matteo Pessina, and Gianluca Caprari all scored in the first half to put Alessandro Nesta’s side up by three goals before Patrick Nuamah scored the consolation goal in the 68th minute for the Serie B side.

Monza hope that their recent victory could give them a spark, especially since they’ve been lacking in the final third so far, only with two league goals.

Caprari, in particular, is expected to be aggressive against Napoli since he is seeking his 50th Serie A goal. He needs one more to reach the milestone, although he has failed to find the back of the net in any of his last 15 Italian top-flight appearances.

History

Since Monza earned their promotion to Serie A for the first time in 2022, they’ve faced off against Napoli four times.

Napoli won 4-0 the first time they met Monza in the Italian top-flight, but Monza bounced back with a 2-0 upset win in May 2023.

Last season, Monza held Napoli to a goalless draw at the Diego Maradona Stadium on December 2023, but the Partenopei won 4-2 in the reverse fixture at the Brianteo Stadium last April.

The Biancorossi are winless in their last 14 Serie A outings, while the Partenopei are unblemished at home this season.

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2024 odds predict Napoli to cruise past Monza on Sunday. Antonio Conte’s men are 1.33 favourites, whereas Alessandro Nesta’s side is a 7.80 underdog, and a draw is at 4.52 in the 1X2 market.

Napoli have hit a purple patch, as they’ve scored 11 goals in their last four games this month across all competitions, so they should have no problems making good of our recommended bet above.

SBOTOP bettors may also go for options like Over 2.50 at 1.73, Over 2.75 at 2.01, and Total Goal 2-3 at 2.02, while Total Goal 4-6 at 3.03 is worth considering if you really fancy Napoli to catch fire.

On the other hand, a goalless draw – the result of this exact fixture last season – can give you a huge payout of 12.50.
