Arsenal 2-2 Manchester City
A draw wasn’t the perfect result for either team but at least Arsenal showed some fight to match a hungry Manchester City at the Emirates today.
And while football betting fans increasingly doubt the Gunners will hold on to their preciously guarded top four spot, they fought with real character for their boss.
Having qualified for the Champions League every single season in Wenger’s 20-year tenure it’s unthinkable they arrived at the game having lost four of their last five league football games.
The betting odds shifted back and forth in the first hour as Arsenal came from behind twice to level; and that will have pleased Wenger while frustrating his opposite number, Pep Guardiola.
City were dominant for much of the first half and it took only five minutes for the visitors to go ahead when Kevin De Bruyne found Leroy Sane with a long ball for the German winger to round David Ospina and slot home. It could have been two five minutes later but De Bruyne’s strike came back off the post as Arsenal reeled under the early pressure.
And in a first half game punctuated by niggly fouls, Theo Walcott could have seen red for a particularly nasty one but the Arsenal front man stayed on the pitch and profited on 40 minutes. Shkodran Mustafi headed over the City defence and the ball fell to Walcott who gratefully poked home.
The lead lasted only two minutes though as David Silva brilliantly found Sergio Aguero and the City hotshot beat Ospina from a tight angle. City pressed for a third early in the second half but Arsenal hung on and drew level on 53 minutes when Mustafi headed home deftly from a corner.
On this showing, City don’t have enough to win the league, and Arsenal will struggle to reach the top four. But if they show the grit they had to come back twice today, then there is hope.
