A pivotal weekend at the top and bottom?
Possibly. Some will say probably.
Certainly, there were some results which surprised sports betting fans and turned the pre-match betting odds on their head.
Suddenly, a number of major issues could be decided before the final weekend.
West Ham United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Exactly 14 months after the Hammers damaged Spurs’ title bid with a 1-0 win at Upton Park, Slaven Bilic’s men have probably derailed their unlikely chase this time around.
Spurs were left to rue missed chances in the first half as the Hammers produced an improved showing.
A Manuel Lanzini strike, coupled with a third consecutive clean sheet for the first time in 17 months, sent the majority of the East End crowd home happy.
Manchester City 5-0 Crystal Palace
When City play like this, it must just make their fans think of what might have been.
Granted, Palace were still in the contest for the opening 45 minutes but once skipper Vincent Kompany doubled the lead four minutes after the re-start, this was exhibition stuff.
Pep Guardiola’s side should be contesting league titles with their ability. Palace aren’t safe yet.
Bournemouth 2-2 Stoke City
An enjoyable end-of-season contest between two sides in mid-table.
Four goals, two of them own goals, and the Cherries twice coming from behind.
Bournemouth need one more point from their final two matches to top last season’s point tally.
Burnley 2-2 W.B.A.
Another absorbing contest, particularly in the second half as both teams cancelled each other out.
Sam Vokes’ double took the Clarets to 40 points and within touching distance of back-to-back seasons in the top flight for the first time since the mid-1970s.
Despite failing to win in six, West Brom are still holding onto eighth spot.
Hull City 0-2 Sunderland
Did anyone see this coming? Could it be the moment Hull ultimately lost their Premier League status?
Players and supporters will be devastated after this loss as the timing of Marco Silva’s first home defeat, against already-relegated visitors, couldn’t have been worse.
Silva hasn’t lost a home match at any club he has managed since March 2014 and this could be so, so costly.
Leicester City 3-0 Watford
Leicester have finished the season displaying the form of champions, winning seven and drawing one of their 10 games under interim boss Craig Shakespeare.
They are now up to ninth which is a fine position given the top seven spots are occupied by the established big seven clubs.
Wilfred Ndidi, Riyad Mahrez, and Marc Albrighton grabbed the goals and the Foxes also hit the woodwork twice.
Swansea City 1-0 Everton
No team-talk would have had the impact Hull’s earlier defeat had on the Swans.
That simply galvanised Paul Clement’s players into action from the get-go and they were further boosted by boisterous fans who cheered them on from the start. Fernando Llorente was the match-winner with his 13th league goal of the campaign, while former captain Ashley Williams was jeered by some supporters on his first return to Wales.
Liverpool 0-0 Southampton
Four matches and no goals. That is precisely Liverpool’s record against the super Saints this season.
This goalless draw meant both league matches between the sides have ended 0-0 and, once again, it was the impressive Fraser Forster who kept them at bay – the highlight being a penalty stop save to deny the reliable James Milner midway through the second half.
He hadn’t missed a penalty since November 2009.
Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United
Arsene Wenger finally has a victory over his nemesis Jose Mourinho.
The Man Utd boss was as good as his word as he rested players and saw his side slip to a first league defeat in six and a half months.
Two goals in four minutes early in the second period won the game to keep alive Arsenal’s outside hopes of a top four finish.
