Can the Spurs really stop the best team in the NBA?

Western Conference Finals Game 1

San Antonio Spurs @ Golden State Warriors (May 15, 03:30 GMT+8)

A 67-win season with only five defeats at home – that’s the Golden State Warriors. They are the best team in the NBA. They are chaos incarnate.

So the question now is: can the Spurs stop them in the Western Conference Finals?

With betting websites and sports betting pundits favouring the Warriors to dominate, it will be a tall order, though it’s not entirely impossible for the Spurs to pull off a live betting shock or two. It’s just that I won’t put my hopes up if I were you.

Of course, it’s always dangerous to underestimate San Antonio. The Houston Rockets learned that the hard way.

The Spurs are incredible defensively – there’s no doubt about that after stopping one of the fastest and highest-powered attacks in the league – and are surprisingly efficient offensively with Kawhi Leonard leading the way.

They also have the league’s best mind in Gregg Popovich; and although the Warriors interim coach Mike Brown isn’t intimidated by his good friend and claims that he could beat him, no one really knows what magic Pop will use to stun his opponents.

However, the difference in talent is massive. There’s just no other team like Golden State.

Unlike the Rockets who are pretty much dependent on their three-pointers, the Warriors can score anywhere. They have four-time scoring leader Kevin Durant who can rack up points any way he wants while the Splash brothers are consistent threats from deep.

Not to mention that there’s Draymond Green playing better than ever on both ends of the floor (he’s even shooting over 50 percent from downtown in the postseason!).

Additionally, the Warriors have already proven that they can overcome a defensive team like Utah. They are at a tactical disadvantage in that series given the Jazz’ size, but they still managed to sweep them and waltz through the finals.

So why can’t they do the same against the Spurs, right?

Sure enough, San Antonio can challenge Golden State by dominating the paint and making strategic adjustments just like they did against Houston. But there’s a limit to where that can bring them.

If you think this will be a tight Game 1, the Spurs Asian Handicap +10.00 @ 1.98 seems solid. Nonetheless, with the fact that the Warriors have won three of their four playoff games at Oracle Arena with double-digit leads, Golden State Asian Handicap -10.00 @ 1.90 appears to be a better choice.
