Arsenal vs Sunderland
Come on! The old professor has done it 20 times already, but can he make it 21?
Qualifying for the Champions League has become Arsenal’s raison d’être, but this season could end in disappointment.
The betting odds are stacked against him this time and while the Gunners still have two football games to play, they are relying on either Liverpool or Manchester City falling badly at the final hurdle. Of all the football betting pundits, you’d expect former Gunner Paul Merson to back Arsenal to qualify; and so he did at the weekend.
But with Liverpool and City both winning…time is running out.
On Wednesday, Sunderland roll into the Capital City with only 19th place to play for. The hapless Black Cats need to get at least a point at the Emirates to have a chance of catching relegation buddies Middlesbrough.
I just can’t see it happening.
The only glimmer of hope for David Moyes is that the brilliant Alexis Sanchez faces a fitness test after being the zillionth visiting player in history to limp off at Stoke! But Sunderland need more than a glimmer.
Arsene Wenger has ultimate faith in his side to fight to the end: “The players have character,” he said. “We have gone through a hostile environment and you do not recover if you are not strong. We are always finishing strong because we keep our focus.
“If we finish outside the top four it will be down to one point; and one point will be hard to swallow.”
Quite.
