Garbiñe Muguruza vs Venus Williams (7-5, 6-0)
Two years after she competed in her first Grand Slam final at the All England Club, Garbiñe Muguruza returned and finished what she wasn’t able to do before: win the Wimbledon title.
Interestingly, she did it against Venus Williams, the older sister of Serena who denied the Spaniard the title in 2015.

Nonetheless, Muguruza fought those off and was too good down the stretch as she never dropped a game from that point.
It didn’t help Williams that she faltered in the second, hitting long and wide shots, which eventually allowed the steady Muguruza to stage a six-game run to close out the match and lift the Venus Rosewater Dish.
Williams finished with 25 unforced errors while Muguruza only had 11. And although the American star had hit more winners than the Spaniard, she was still left behind both on first and second serve points won.
“Two years ago, I lost in the finals against Serena, and she told me one day I was going to maybe win. Two years after, here I am,” Muguruza said after the fight.
Indeed, it was a disappointment for the romantics as the 37-year-old Williams could have capped her fairytale run by lifting her sixth Wimbledon. Nonetheless, the match can still be considered a positive result for tennis as Muguruza showed everybody a bright and exciting future for the sport.
Muguruza just became the second Spanish player to seize the women’s title after her coach, Conchita Martinez, did it in 1994. With the victory, Muguruza will also return to the Top 5 in the rankings and rise to third on the Race to Singapore leaderboard.
