The Strong Bavarians are Back and Winning!

Borussia Dortmund 2-2 (4-5 on pens) Bayern Munich

It wasn’t a vintage performance by Bayern Munich, but they did show glimpses of their best form despite missing a handful of their first-team regulars.

Most sports betting fans grew concerned about Bayern’s chances in their DFL-Supercup showdown against rivals Dortmund, with James Rodriguez, Thiago, David Alaba, Arjen Robben and Jerome Boateng ruled out for the trip. However, the Bavarians proved why they are the German Champions as they defied betting tips in the season’s curtain-raiser that lived up to its pre-match billing.

Bayern, who lost four of their last five pre-season football games, appeared rusty and looked to be in trouble in the match after Dortmund led as early as 12 minutes, but they twice came from behind to draw and win the ensuing penalty shootout.

The Bavarians shrugged off their poor form midway through the first half, thanks to Robert Lewandowski who cancelled out Christian Pulisic’s opener. They played brighter after that and tested Dortmund goalie Roman Burki on several occasions, though without finding the back of the net before the break.

New BVB manager Peter Bosz guided his team to work their way back come the second; and they thought they won it when last year’s top-scorer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, gave them back the lead in the 71st minute with a nice finish off the counter-attack.

The home side seemed close to winning, but a late scramble in front of the goal allowed Joshua Kimmich to fire the ball into the net, which eventually bounced off Lukasz Piszczek for the own goal leveller.

Kimmich was the first one to miss in the shootout, but Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich stepped up to deny BVB’s Sebastian Rode before thwarting Marc Bartra for the victory.

Bayern made history with the win as they now have a record six Super Cup titles, leaving behind five-time titlist Dortmund who last won the Super Cup in 2014.

Next up for both teams is the 2017-18 Bundesliga season, with Bayern set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the opener and Dortmund scheduled against Wolfsburg.
