Portugal 0-3 Netherlands
New coach Ronald Koeman will be delighted as the Netherlands ripped it up at the Stade de Geneve, easily beating a strong Portugal team to defy betting tips.
Koeman is a legend in the Netherlands. As a powerful, attacking centre-back, he scored 14 goals in 79 football games for the national team. And now, as coach, he’s already giving his men back the pride they somehow lost.
Having failed to qualify for Russia, you’d have got very long betting odds on the Dutch being three up at halftime, but that’s exactly where they were. It only took 11 minutes for them to get ahead when Memphis Depay shot smartly into the bottom corner. We all expected a response from Portugal but it didn’t really come, and Ryan Babel headed home a cross from the excellent Matthijs de Ligt on 32 minutes to double the lead.
And it was De Ligt who turned provider again on the stroke of halftime. The lively Depay won a free-kick and de Ligt headed down the cross for Virgil van Dijk to fire home the third.
Portugal, who most likely had a tongue lashing at the break, looked for a way to get back in the match but to no avail. And it was game over on the hour when Joao Cancelo, already on a yellow, saw red after knocking Tonny Vilhena.
The Netherlands have the summer off and are preparing for Euro 2020, where they may just be a force to be reckoned with.
And if they perform like this, Portugal might get more time off than they hoped for too!
