Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United
What a game!
What a turnaround!
No-one. Not any sports betting fan, not any commentator, not any mystic meg surely saw this coming!
At half-time, the betting odds were all about how many champions elect Man City would score in their procession to the Premier League crown.
The champagne was not just on order but on ice and City were all set to clinch English football’s top prize against their arch rivals.
As scripts go, it was the perfect day for anyone of a light blue persuasion.
Remarkably, by full-time, the only voices that could be heard were United fans.
As some City men lost their discipline, their frustration was understandable.
The match should have long been over by half-time as a header from skipper Vincent Kompany and a Ilkay Gundogan strike put them on the brink in a dominant showing against abject United.
Journalists up and down the country were eulogising, beginning to write their acclamations of the new champions of England.
Of course that will happen soon and, even after United’s stirring second half fightback, it could still have been their night to remember given the hosts twice hit the woodwork and forced David de Gea into a terrific save.
But from zero to hero: after a first half masterclass from City, this was Mourinho at his best.
Chris Smalling, castigated by many at half-time for his defensive display, proved the most unlikely of match-winners after Paul Pogba stunned the runaway leaders – and possibly some of his own fans – with a quick fire double.
Once Smalling completed the turnaround , City came close to levelling on three separate occasions and they certainly will wonder how they ended up losing this one.
In truth, they didn’t deserve too.
They will win the title of course and deservedly so (which makes the tears of some home fans at the full-time whistle most bizarre).
But this was United’s night – there was no way they, in Mourinho’s words, wanted to be ‘clowns’ at a party.
And what price Pogba now? Perhaps that one can be discussed between his agent and Guardiola!
