Pep Guardiola’s candid comments regarding Bastian Schweinsteiger and Pedro should be seen as it is: plain commentary. Manchester United fans should not put any colour in it because for one, Guardiola stands nothing to gain if all he was doing was to disparage his two former wards. Secondly, Guardiola can be considered as an authority in the matters he discussed.
And I agree. Guardiola was Schweinsteiger’s manager for several years and he is in position to provide impartial analysis. And Guardiola’s input on the matter was fair as it was accurate. It is no secret in the footballing world that Schweinsteiger has been hobbled by injuries for years.
“When he does not have injury problems, I am completely convinced he will do very well at Manchester United. He is a top, top player,” Guardiola was quoted as saying. So during the periods he is healthy, he still needs the time to be actually game form fit, and that takes time. I agree with Guardiola – although Schweinsteiger has been a magnet for injuries in the ankle and knees, when he is fit, he is a tremendously talented cog who can positively influence the outcome of the match in favour of the Red Devils.
So now, I guess the imperative is with the Red Devils training and medical staff to make sure Schweinsteiger is being subjected to conditions amenable to his long-term health. I guess that has always been the key for any player – staying healthy, fit and in-form. Anyone who is injured can never be a true asset on the turf if he or she has some nagging pain or injury that needs to be treated.
I just hope that, for the Red Devil’s sake, that Schweinsteiger is given as much time healthy as possible so that he can be the force that he can be at Old Trafford and help the Red Devils in their campaign this season, in the domestic as well as in the European level.
