Belgium 3-3 Mexico
Hirving Lozano and Romelu Lukaku both bagged a brace in a six-goal live betting thriller that entertained the crowd in King Baudouin Stadium at Brussels.
Although it was just a friendly, it’s definitely a great teaser for the 2018 World Cup, especially if most of the football games in the tournament put as much emphasis to attacking as this one.
Mexico had a lot of positives to take from this matchup, particularly after falling behind twice only to come back and even take the lead at the hour.
Andres Guardado converted from the spot to cancel out Eden Hazard’s 17th-minute goal and level the scores at halftime. Lukaku, nonetheless, restored the Belgians’ lead after the break with a nice finish off a Dries Mertens’ cross.
Lozano immediately stepped up for the visitors and hit a quick-fire double to put the Mexicans in front for the first time. The 22-year-old scored the second equaliser with a right-footed shot on 56 minutes before getting the rebound (from his first effort) and volleying the ball past keeper Thibaut Courtois four minutes later.
The match, which was an all-out display of attacking talent, reached another stalemate when Lukaku pulled the Red Devils back into the game with a close-range finish 20 minutes before time. That proved to be the last goal of the game, however, as both sides settled for the draw.
Indeed, it was a beautiful game from the two heavyweights. And Juan Carlos Osorio’s men will surely be satisfied with this result against the fifth-ranked Belgium, who are one of the top contenders to lift the trophy in Russia next summer.
For Belgium, meanwhile, they’ll be happy with Lukaku’s display as the Manchester United frontman reached 30 goals, equalling the nation’s all-time scoring record set by Bernard Voorhoof and Paul van Himst.
It’s also a match filled with learning for the Belgians as they saw in the game that they need quality defenders like the missing Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld to execute Roberto Martinez’ football.
Next up for Belgium is another friendly against Japan, while Mexico are set to visit the sixth-ranked Poland next week.
