It’s Week 30 of football games as La Liga heads into an uninterrupted run of matches without international breaks.
Sports betting has long pointed to a Barcelona coronation.
Nothing else is crystal clear, however, including whether Barca can go through the league season unbeaten. Now that would be a bonanza!
WEEK 30 SATURDAY:
Girona vs Levante
After back-to-back wins, Levante finally have a cushion as they try and keep their heads above water.
They may have expected Girona to be close to them at the start of the season, yet here we are in late March and the newly promoted club are on the outskirts of a European berth.
They even scored three in the Bernabeu last time out. The only problem, though, was they conceded six!
Athletic Bilbao vs Celta Vigo
These two clubs have become used to contesting a top-six place in recent seasons.
Not so this time. Even the Europa League has proven too much for Bilbao who went out at the last 16 stage.
Realistically, this may be a chance for both sides to experiment ahead of what they will hope to be more fruitful campaigns next term. However, Vigo will tell you victory in the Basque country will keep their outside hopes of qualification alive.
WEEK 30 SUNDAY:
Las Palmas vs Real Madrid
It’s been a frustrating period for Las Palmas who haven’t won in their last seven, with four draws and three defeats.
All this at a time when nearest rivals Levante have found form.
Could this be a good time to play Real? Is there ever a good time to play the reigning champions who may have one eye on their sell-out Champions League clash with Juventus?
Will Isco, fresh from his hat-trick for Spain in midweek, get the nod from boss Zinedine Zidane?
Sevilla vs Barcelona
The undoubted match of the weekend.
Jesus Navas is back in training as Sevilla welcome fellow Champions League quarter-finalists to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan just three days before they host Bayern Munich.
On paper, Barca’s trip to the Andalusians is one of their most difficult domestic fixtures remaining. Can the runaway leaders finally be beaten?
RCD Espanyol vs Alaves
After a great run since the turn of the year, Alaves have lost four out of five but have made themselves safe.
So much so in fact, that victory in this one will see them move only a point behind their opponents.
Espanyol are in pretty decent form and will start as favourites.
Leganes vs Valencia
What a super win for Leganes last time out.
Their 2-1 success over Sevilla may have been only their second win in 11 games, but it moved them up to 12th spot.
Valencia are clear favourites to claim a top-four finish, and that would be a fine achievement even if they have struggled to maintain their heady pre-Christmas form since the turn of the year.
WEEK 30 MONDAY:
Eibar vs Real Sociedad
Eibar have slipped in the last month but once more are proving an example to bigger clubs of how to achieve against the odds.
In fact, they still harbour faint hopes of sealing a top-six finish.
Even that is a pipe dream for Sociedad. Hard to think they qualified for the Champions League as recently as 2013.
Malaga vs Villarreal
They may have held Vigo on their own turf a fortnight ago, but basement battlers Malaga know only wins will suffice for them now.
They seem destined for the drop after a decade in La Liga.
In contrast, the Yellow Submarine are in the box seat for fifth place, helped by a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid vs Deportivo La Coruna
That defeat means Atletico have seen their lead over city rivals Real in third place cut to four points.
Coach Diego Simeone will demand a home victory as Rojiblancos grow more confident that star man Antoine Griezmann will still be at the club next season.
Simeone and Clarence Seedorf used to lock horns in midfield, and now they face each other in the dugout with Seedorf looking for a first win since his appointment at Deportivo last month.
WEEK 30 TUESDAY:
Getafe vs Real Betis
This clash between the quiet hopefuls of La Liga may not garner too much interest outside of their respective camps.
But why shouldn’t it be with both in prime position to claim a Euro spot should others slip up?
Two of Getafe’s last three home matches have also resulted in comprehensive 3-0 wins.
