Bayern Munich vs VfL Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg head to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday to meet the mighty Bayern, but their hosts’ current form is not quite as frightening as it has been in recent seasons, and the Wolves will hope to give their opponents a nasty bite.
Hansi Flick’s Bayern will be determined to bounce back from a draw with Union Berlin and assert themselves once again at the summit of the Bundesliga table. They have conceded top spot to Bayer Leverkusen and that won’t sit well with the domestic and European champions, so they will look their enemy in the eye and without fear.
Wolfsburg, spearheaded by the giant striker Wout Weghorst are on a fine run of form and can draw level on points with Bayern if they can beat the reigning champions. This match promises to be a treat for SBOTOP Bundesliga with goals all but guaranteed.
Talking Points
Too many draws for Die Bayern
Die Bayern haven’t been at their best in recent weeks, with a sequence of Bundesliga 2020 results featuring rather too many draws for head coach Hansi Flick’s liking, three in the last four outings to be precise. Robert Lewandowski netted his 13th goal of the season to snatch a point against Union Berlin at the weekend and recent draws with Red Bull Leipzig and Werder Bremen sandwiched a rare victory over Stuttgart.
Is this just an early season blip? There is no rhyme or reason to Bayern’s current form other than the continued absence of Joshua Kimmich with a knee injury and Javi Martinez with a strained hamstring. But Flick has a deep squad packed with experience and young talent. Lewandowski’s partner up front, Thomas Muller has six goals already while Serge Gnabry, with four and Kingsley Coman, with six assists, ensure the future is bright in Bavaria.
And Bayern are boosted by the return of full-back Alphonso Davies, who made his comeback against Union Berlin and should keep his place against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.
Die Bayern need to start winning again and some unlucky team is due a hammering.
Wolfsburg’s winning run
But it won’t necessarily be Wolfsburg.
Head coach Oliver Glasner has guided his side up into the Champions League places and they are one of two teams, alongside Bayer Leverkusen, who remain unbeaten this season, with five wins and six draws.
Six foot six inch Dutch striker Wout Weghorst has nine goals already this season, bagging two in Wolfsburg’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, a result which lifted Die Wolfe up to fourth place in the league table. Wolfsburg looked set to go down to their first defeat of the season when Bas Dost gave Frankfurt a lead, but two goals in the last 15 minutes turned the game on its head.
The big man has scored 42 goals for Wolfsburg in 77 games and is third top scorer in the Bundesliga this season, behind Lewandowski and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland.
Midfield man Max Arnold is Wolfsburg through and through, making his debut in 2011 at the age of 17, the youngest ever debutant for the club, and has since made over 200 appearances. He’s a classy ball player and a good source of ammunition for Weghorst so the Bayern midfielders will have a close eye on him.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Koen Casteels has played over 100 games for Wolfsburg and has been given the captain’s armband; he’s likely to be a busy man on Wednesday.
History
The pre-match FC Bayern vs Wolfsburg betting odds predict a home win and, when you look at the head to head statistics, it would simply be a continuation of Die Bayern’s total domination over Wolfsburg. The Bavarians have won 42 of the 53 meetings between the two sides since 1997, while Wolfsburg have managed just five wins and six draws in that time.
Bayern have won the last five meetings, and the last three with a goal difference of 12 to nil. The most recent clash ended in a 4-0 drubbing for Wolfsburg on their own turf when both Lewandowski and Muller were on target for Die Bayern.
But with four wins from the last five games Wolfsburg are in great form, though they have only won once on the road this season, drawing the other four.
Betting Tip
Bayern Munich vs VfL Wolfsburg | Bayern Munich Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 1.91 | |
December 17, 3:30 (GMT+8) |
Bayern is at 1.33 to win this match while the draw is at 5.20 and Wolfsburg at 8.00.
Those are short odds for a team not firing on all cylinders against a side which is; but I suspect Bayern’s run of draws is a blip, and expect normal service to resume on Wednesday when they need to up their game against a fierce opponent.
They need to keep Weghorst under control and if they can, for an outside bet, a score line of 3-1 at 8.25 shouldn’t be far off the mark.
