Bundesliga: Freiburg Looking to Snap Winless Drought

SC Freiburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach

There are only five matchdays left in the Bundesliga, which means that every game matters from here on forward.

The 30th matchday of the German top-flight will feature two clubs fighting for position in the Bundesliga table. In this preview, SC Freiburg are looking to keep their Europa League hopes alive as they host Borussia Monchengladbach at the Schwarzwald Stadion this weekend.

The home team would be more than eager to snap their drought in the past few weeks as they have yet to register a victory since the league’s restart.

On the other hand, the Foals are keen to increase the pressure on RB Leipzig as they try to sneak into the third spot in the league. Gladbach have 56 points and are trailing by only two to the Red Bulls – who have 58.

With Marco Rose’s men hitting their stride as of late, they are in prime position to leapfrog RB Leipzig momentarily but staying there may be another story for another day.

The Bundesliga 2020 odds have put the road team as the overwhelming favourites. Upon checking the 1×2 market, Borussia Monchengladbach are priced at 1.81 while SC Freiburg are at 4.40 and a draw is at 3.50.

Can Christian Streich’s men finally break out of their funk? Or will Marco Rose’s side keep their edge in holding the last Champions League spot?

SBOBET offers you an in-depth preview for this weekend match.

Talking Points

SC Freiburg playing with a sense of urgency

Just like in my prior preview that featured SC Freiburg, they remain at 38 points but have dropped to eighth in the standings.

In the last time out, Christian Streich’s men suffered a tough loss against Bayer Leverkusen with no thanks to Kai Havertz, who has been superb in producing the best Bundesliga 2020 highlights.

SC Freiburg would need a drastic change in their results if they want to secure an Europa League spot. A loss in this Friday’s match may see themselves drop further to the 10th spot assuming Hertha BSC and Schalke 04 win their respective fixtures.

Nils Petersen remains to be the alpha dog for Die Breisgauer. The veteran forward leads the team with nine goals and two assists so far this term.

After experiencing a scoreless funk a few weeks ago, Petersen finally broke through by scoring for the first time since mid-January against Eintracht Frankfurt, and he will be needed more than ever in the next few matches.

His attacking partner in Lucas Holer is slowly finding his footing as well. The 25-year-old striker was on target for the first time in 14 games and he will look to keep improving on his form too.

A wildcard for this upcoming match is the fitness of Robin Koch. During the last time out, the young centre-back was carted off due to back spasms and he is deemed questionable this Friday. His young legs and physicality will certainly be a huge boost especially in dealing the likes of Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea.

Gladbach looking to seal the deal

The Foals were able to brush off a disappointing 0-0 draw against Werder Bremen by thrashing Union Berlin with a 4-1 tally last Sunday.

Marcus Thuram celebrates scoring a goal for Borussia Monchengladbach by going down to his knees

They were powered by the dangerous attacking duo of Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram who have accounted for 22 goals and 18 assists so far this campaign.

Marco Rose’s side have only lost one match since the league restart over a month ago despite missing some key players in their roster.

Scoring threats Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo are doubtful since they’ve been dealing with their respective injuries, but it’s a good thing that several reinforcements are expected to work their way back.

Tony Jantschke is available again after serving his suspension while Christoph Kramer is expected to beef up the middle for Gladbach.

Like RB Leipzig, Borussia Monchengladbach have been a surprise package this season. Although they aren’t expected to come close to a title, Marco Rose’s side is definitely headed towards a much better direction compared to last season.

History

The home team normally wins in this head-to-head matchup in the last 23 times, with Freiburg winning 12 and Gladbach winning in 11 times. The last road win between these two teams happened in 2002 when Gladbach won 1-0.

Die Breisgauer tend to score more against Gladbach than any other opponent by tallying 51 goals total.

Betting Tip

??
SC Freiburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach Borussia Monchengladbach Asian Handicap -0.50 @ 1.81
June 6, 02:30 (GMT+8)

This match is expected to be as close as it gets especially with both of these teams having quite a history.

However, I would have to give Gladbach a significant advantage over Freiburg because of their recent goalscoring exploits along with the home team’s horrid form since the restart.

Nonetheless, this game should be considered as a must-watch game for football fans and I can’t wait for these two to go at it this weekend.
