Bundesliga: Gladbach Geared to Bounce Back at Bremen

Werder Bremen vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Werder Bremen gave their bid to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga a huge boost as they scored a huge away win at Freiburg.

After losing 10 of their last 12 league matches, the Bundesliga 2020 betting odds were heavily against Werder, but they found a way to pick up all three points.

But now, Werder face a much tougher test back at home — where they have struggled mightily this season — as they host fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Foals will be eager to get back to winning ways after going down to an in-form Bayer Leverkusen side over the weekend.

Talking Points

Bremen’s home struggles

Similar to their 4-1 defeat against Leverkusen, Werder Bremen were outplayed by Freiburg. The hosts enjoyed nearly 63 per cent of possession and had the 17-10 advantage in total shots, with 7-2 shots on target.

But Werder were able to get an early goal through Leonardo Bittencourt, which allowed them to play more defensive for most of the match. Freiburg were eventually able to get the ball in the net late on, but it was chalked off by VAR.

Werder Bremen have the worst defensive record in the league with 59 goals conceded, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their clean sheet against Freiburg was just the second they have kept the entire season. Their first came in their 1-0 away win at Fortuna Dusseldorf in their first game back from the winter break.

Werder’s win moved them to just two points behind Dusseldorf, who are currently in the relegation play-off spot.

But if they stand any chance of surviving in the Bundesliga this season, they must improve on their home form, which has been horrendous.

They have won just once in 12 home matches at the Weserstadion this season, with two draws and nine defeats. They’ve also scored just nine home goals, which is easily the fewest in the league, while conceding 30 goals. They’ve lost each of their last seven games at home, scoring just two goals in the process.

Gladbach must bounce back

Borussia Monchengladbach got a taste of what Werder went through last week after they were beaten 3-1 by Leverkusen.

Once again, Kai Havertz was the star as he scored two more goals to send Leverkusen to third, one point above Gladbach.

Gladbach played reasonably well, though; they outshot Leverkusen and had six shots on target. But an in-form Leverkusen side simply shot better and converted their chances.

On the bright side, Marcus Thuram has been making Bundesliga 2020 highlights since Gladbach’s return to action. The 22-year-old has scored in back-to-back matches and now has eight goals to go along with eight assists this season.

Gladbach’s dangerous attacking trio of Thuram, Alassane Plea, and Breel Embolo will be licking their lips at the prospect of going at Werder Bremen’s wobbly backline.

Gladbach will not hesitate to attack their hosts. The Foals have been on fire of late away from home. They’ve won each of their last three away matches, scoring at least three goals in each match.

Meanwhile, their defending away from home has been impressive. They’ve conceded just 15 goals in 13 away games, tied for third-best in the league. Although, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last four away matches.

Gladbach’s last three opponents — Fortuna Dusseldorf, Augsburg, and Eintracht Frankfurt — haven’t been the strongest, but Werder Bremen are of a similar level as those three, which bodes well for the Foals.

History

Borussia Monchengladbach made short work of Werder Bremen at Borussia Park back in November. Patrick Herrmann’s brace led Gladbach to a comfortable 3-1 win.

With that win, Gladbach extended their unbeaten run over Werder in the league to eight matches (six wins, two draws). And over their last 14 meetings, Gladbach have lost just once, with nine wins and four draws.

Betting Tip

??
Werder Bremen vs Borussia Monchengladbach Borussia Monchengladbach 1X2 @ 1.88
May 27, 02:30 (GMT+8)

SBOBET odds have Gladbach as significant 1.88 favourites to get the away win over Werder Bremen. The home side is priced at just 3.80, while a draw is 3.65.

It’s best not to overthink this match. Gladbach are the superior side and will be eager to get back on track after their loss to Leverkusen.

While Werder’s win over Freiburg was a surprise, their home form is too woeful to think they can pull off another stunning result against Gladbach.

Perhaps they can give Gladbach a tougher fight than expected. But in the end, I still expect the Foals to leave the Weserstadion with all three points.
