Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund
Title aspirations are on the line as two Bundesliga giants in Gladbach and Dortmund battle it out on Sunday at the Borussia Park.
These two sides are in a tight four-way race to the Bundesliga championship with teams such as Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig leading the way with 52 and 49 points respectively.
After experiencing new heights by leading the table in the earlier parts of the season, the Foals were overtaken after a couple of slip-ups. However, they remain steady in the hunt as they’ve won three of their last five matches.
Meanwhile, Dortmund are back to their high-scoring ways after experiencing a miserable Christmas and they are keen on maintaining their roll to take care of business.
In their reverse fixture last October, it was BVB who came away with a close 1-0 victory, but a lot has changed since then.
Can the Foals exact revenge on their Borussia rivals? Or will we see the same result again this weekend? Tune in here at SBOBET for your daily dose of the Bundesliga!
Talking Points
Gladbach regaining their rhythm
The Foals bounced back nicely after a wobbly start to the 2020 calendar year. After being held goalless in their loss against Schalke, Gladbach went on to grab some favourable Bundesliga 2020 results over these past few weeks.
Gladbach took care of business against bottom feeders in Mainz and Fortuna while they held a resurgent RB Leipzig squad to a draw in a very heated affair. Most recently, they defeated Augsburg in a high-scoring game a week after failing to close out Hoffenheim in what was a winnable match.
For a while, it appeared that Gladbach were on its way to sink further to the table because of their slump, but Alassane Plea’s return has surely boosted the Foals’ campaign this season.
The Frenchman is leading the team in scoring this season. Plea has already recorded eight goals and six assists this term while his fellow forwards in Marcus Thuram, Lars Stindl, and Breel Embolo helped their cause as well by contributing 21 goals and 14 assists.
Surprisingly, they haven’t scored a lot of goals than expected as they’ve only netted 46 goals this term. However, it’s their defence that has been keeping them afloat by conceding only 27 so far.
Marco Rose has a stacked deck at the back with the likes of Ramy Bensebaini, Matthias Ginter, Nico Elvedi, and Yann Sommer manning the goalpost and they will be tasked to take on the challenge on stopping BVB from scoring this Sunday.
Doing it against a team like Dortmund will be easier said than done. But the Bundesliga 2020 odds will tilt to the Foals’ favour should they be able to achieve it.
Haaland and Sancho make an exciting pair
The elephant in the room is that Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho will be the key to BVB’s success moving forward.
These two youngsters have been phenomenal for Dortmund ever since they linked up as they would supply the goals needed – and it comes in bunches thanks to their mix of youth, speed, and versatility.
Sancho leads BVB in goals scored with 16 along with 16 assists while Haaland continues to make his presence felt by pumping in 11 goals since his arrival towards the end of December 2019.
Haaland in particular has been the key piece to BVB’s puzzle as he took the league by storm and became the first player in league history to score nine goals in his first six Bundesliga appearances. Gladbach boss Marco Rose is fully aware of what he can do especially since he’s coached him before at Red Bull Salzburg.
Haaland, along with Sancho, is expected to carry the load once more as they try to beat Gladbach on their home field. They will be also supported on that end by the likes of Marco Reus, Achraf Hakimi, and Paco Alcacer.
History
Matches between Dortmund and Gladbach have been entertaining as they’ve averaged 3.6 goals per game in their last 10 meetings.
BVB were the one who dealt Gladbach’s first-ever Bundesliga defeat in 1966 in a thrilling 5-4 win. The Foals later recorded the largest victory in Bundesliga history when they demolished Dortmund, 12-0, in 1978.
Dortmund have won their last four visits at the Borussia Park. However, Gladbach have never lost five straight Bundesliga matches at home to an opponent.
