Hoffenheim vs Borussia Dortmund
Two title hopefuls come face to face, on Saturday, when Lucien Favre takes his in-form Borussia Dortmund to 1899 Hoffenheim.
The Bundesliga Hoffenheim vs Dortmund clash is the one to watch this weekend, and there’ll be a great atmosphere at the 30,000-capacity Rhein-Neckar Arena. The Dortmund fans will travel down the Rhine in numbers as always, in the hope of cheering their team on to another three points.
But it won’t be easy. Since arriving in the Bundesliga in 2008, Hoffenheim have improved steadily and even finished above their opponents on the final day last season. Not to mention that they boast, for now, one of the best young coaches in world football, Julian Nagelsmann.
It promises to be an intriguing battle, so let’s take a look at the form, which players to watch, who’s had the better of recent meetings…and the SBOBET tips.
Talking Points
Lucien Favre’s team has made a strong start in the Bundesliga, currently sitting second and just two points behind FC Bayern Munich in top place. An away stalemate with Hannover frustrated Die Schwarzgelben but, other than that, it’s been a perfect month.
And they head to Hoffenheim, having got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start too with a victory over Club Brugge. It was a testing night as they had to wait until 20-year-old Christian Pulisic climbed off the bench to net an 85th-minute winner.
Favre gave a place to exciting teenager Jadon Sancho against Brugge. At 18, he looks a real prospect, but BVB fans will have to be patient and not put too much expectation on the young winger’s shoulders. These two players may well start on the bench again, but the hosts will still have plenty to contend with.
BVB have plenty of firepower with Marco Reus leading the frontline, while big summer signings Thomas Delaney and Axel Witsel have already made a big impact and are expected to continue their rise in Dortmund.
Hoffenheim need to make the most of the talent of Coach Julian Nagelsmann before his inevitable move to Leipzig next summer. He’ll have his work cut out to prepare his team for this clash after they conceded a late equaliser to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League last night.
Die Kraichgauer won the last meeting between these two teams, 3-1, at the end of last season—a result which meant both teams qualified for the Champions League on goal difference.
So BVB have a score to settle.
Andrej Kramaric was on target in that game, and he will be a goal threat as always. The Croatian striker has scored over 30 for Hoffenheim since his 2016 arrival, at a ratio of better than one in three.
The hosts have some big lads in their ranks. Striker Adam Szalai helped himself to a brace in a recent 3-1 home win against Freiburg, and Kramaric scored again. While skipper Kevin Vogt is a towering presence, at just over 6-foot-4, in the Hoffenheim midfield.

History
Not so long ago, it was inconceivable that these two teams’ paths would cross; however, a meteoric rise from the fifth tier of German football in 2000 to the Bundesliga in 2008 has changed all that. Doing it all with the help of the financial muscle of software mogul Dietmar Hopp hasn’t made Hoffenheim the most popular of sides, but they’re here to stay like it or not!
Two defeats in three have left Hoffenheim 11th after three games, but both were away from home. And the hosts have gone the last six home games unbeaten, with four wins and two draws.
But then BVB have been strong on the road, with five wins and a draw from the last six away games. The head-to-heads are in the visitors’ favour too, with ten wins to five and seven draws.
It’s a tough one to call, so where do we go with our Hoffenheim vs Dortmund predictions?
Betting Tip
Hoffenheim vs Borussia Dortmund | Dortmund Draw No Bet @ 1.88 | |
September 22, 21:30 (GMT+8) |
The Dortmund giants have already conceded two points, and there’s a real danger of them dropping more in Hoffenheim. Home advantage means we could easily see any one of three results, with the hosts at 2.72 to win, BVB at 2.49 and the draw 3.30.
The visitors come into the game in good form though, and they have more quality and depth in their squad. With that said, I think they’ll have the better of this clash. And there might well be plenty of goals.
Four of the six Bundesliga matches involving these two teams have yielded four or more, and the odds on Over 3.00 goals is understandably at 1.87, with Under available at 2.03.
