Bundesliga: Leipzig Blast Koln To Reclaim Third Spot

Koln 2-4 RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig had another dominating road win against a lowly Bundesliga opponent as they overpowered FC Koln, 4-2, at the RheinEnergieStadion last Monday night.

The attacking quartet of Patrik Schick, Christopher Nkunku, Timo Werner, and Dani Olmo was spectacular in this match, showing everybody the high-octane firepower that they possess in their young roster.

With their latest victory, the Red Bulls are back in the Top 3, leapfrogging the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach. They are trailing by two points behind Borussia Dortmund as they both have 58 and 60 points respectively.

FC Koln, on the other hand, have sank to the 11th spot with 34 points.

The Red Bulls’ Bundesliga 2020 odds of winning the championship this season now look to be murky as Bayern Munich are at least seven points clear ahead of the pack especially after winning the Der Klassiker and against Fortuna Dusseldorf last weekend.

But just in case you are still a doubter of this team, RB Leipzig have earned the right to be considered as a serious contender for the title race in the foreseeable future barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Without further ado, allow SBOBET to recap last Monday night’s set of Bundesliga 2020 highlights in this six-goal affair.

Highlights of the game

RB Leipzig were quick to pounce on the opportunity when it presented itself in just under the first five minutes of the match.

They had an early chance when they pushed the ball out front in the fourth minute. Timo Werner had a shot on target after receiving some nifty passes, but he was denied by Timo Horn.

In the seventh minute, it was Koln’s turn to spearhead the attack. Elvis Rexhbecaj almost slotted the ball in the goal but his attempt fell short. However, Jhon Cordoba used his fast reflexes to take advantage of the sloppy RB Leipzig defence to score the first goal of the evening.

The game looked to be in favour for the Billy Goats up until Jhon Cordoba suffered a knee injury after colliding with Dayot Upamecano and that swung the game into the Red Bulls’ favour.

Patrik Schick scored his ninth goal of the season via a header in the 19th minute when he received a beautiful cross from Angelino, who notched his first Bundesliga assist this season coming from Manchester City.

Christopher Nkunku would add on to the Red Bulls’ barrage by scoring his own goal at the 38th minute. He received a clever through-ball from Konrad Laimer and flicked the ball over Timo Horn for a nice finish.

The Red Bulls stretched their lead in the first half after a textbook counter attack. After Peter Gulacsi saved an attempt from Koln, he alertly made a long distance pass to a running Timo Werner who went coast-to-coast to register the team’s third goal of the evening.

Anthony Modeste would try to cut into the deficit by scoring his third goal of the season in the second half. The French forward scored via a wide strike when Leipzig’s defence failed to clear the ball.

But less than a minute later, Dani Olmo would cap off the Red Bulls’ high-scoring night when he found the back of the net after a corner kick. The Spaniard was at the right place and at the right time when Anthony Modeste’s attempt for a clearance went his way.

Key statistics

Timo Werner remains on target with 25 goals and seven assists so far this campaign. The German wunderkind has been spectacular particularly on the road as he notched 15 of his 25 Bundesliga goals away from home.

Patrik Schick has been on target as well this season since he’s averaging a goal in every two matches with nine in his 18 appearances for RB Leipzig this season.

Christopher Nkunku continues to fill in well for the injured Yussuf Poulsen with his fifth goal for this term.

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann remains undefeated in seven meetings with FC Koln (W5, D2).

Jhon Cordoba is undoubtedly the alpha dog for FC Koln. The Colombian striker now has 12 goals and two assists this term.

What’s next?

RB Leipzig are entering the lighter part of their schedule as they’ll face SC Paderborn, TSG Hoffenheim, and Fortuna Dusseldorf before hosting Borussia Dortmund at the Red Bull Arena in what should be a mouthwatering thriller.

Meanwhile, FC Koln will pay a visit to Augsburg next week before hosting Union Berlin on June 13th at the RheinEnergieStadion.
