RB Leipzig vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Two premiere clubs are going to lock horns in the Bundesliga for this upcoming match day, as the robust Red Bulls will host the formidable Foals this Saturday night.
With the top spot still up for grabs, these two resurgent teams’ championship aspirations are pretty much in the balance especially with Bayern Munich lurking under the shadows.
RB Leipzig hold the top spot with 40 points and they hold a precarious one-point lead against the defending champions Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach are at third with 38 points.
This match will feature two of the league’s most vaunted lineups. With guys like Timo Werner, Marcel Sabitzer, Marcus Thuram, and Breel Embolo, expect this fixture to be a cracker that should definitely delight our football fans.
But before we get into the match, allow SBOBET to give you a sneak peek on this highly-anticipated matchup.
Talking Points
RB Leipzig looking like the favourites
The Red Bulls continue to be one of the most formidable teams this term and a huge part of that is their prolific attack to which they’ve generated 51 goals so far.
Timo Werner is obviously their leading attacker and playmaker and he is second behind Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski with 20 goals and six assists, along with some topnotch Bundesliga 2020 highlights.
He would form a fiery attacking partnership with the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Patrik Schick, and Yussuf Poulsen, as they would terrorize defences on a per-game basis.
For a while, the Red Bulls were enjoying pristine start to their season. But the law of averages has caught up to them after a drawn match against Bayern Munich and a humiliating loss from Schalke.
Their overall inexperience was in question as their core consists of players aged in the early ’20s. But as time went on, Julian Nagelsmann’s side continued to work hard and they’ve brought together a couple of big wins.
From thumping Mainz to an 8-0 tally to start the month of November 2019, majority of RB Leipzig’s victories came in high scoring fashion as they’ve netted at least two goals in those contests. They’ve also found success in the UEFA Champions League as they’ve made it to the Final 16 for the first time in club history.
They started the 2020 year with a bang by demoralising Union Berlin with a 3-1 tally. However, they’ve experienced a small setback just last week when they misfired all over against Eintracht Frankfurt.
But still, the Red Bulls stayed on top of the table and opponents should be wary of what they’re capable of. In fact, you can take it from Gladbach sports director Max Eberl as he shared his thoughts when the Red Bulls signed Dani Olmo from Dinamo Zagreb.
“For me, RB Leipzig were already the biggest favourites because of their performances in the first half of the season and the qualities they have. And now, they have strengthened their lineup again,” said Eberl in a recent interview.
Gladbach in search for their identity
The Foals have been inconsistent as of late and that probably cost them their hold at the top spot of the Bundesliga table.
With uncharacteristic games against VfL Wolfsburg, Hertha BSC, and Schalke, Gladbach now find themselves trailing after overtaking RB Leipzig late last year.
They suffered a goalless defeat at the hands of Die Knappen last week, but they bounced back right away by scoring a come from behind 3-1 victory against Mainz as Alassane Plea bagged a brace to spark the comeback while Florian Neuhaus capped it off with a late goal at the 88th minute.
Plea, along with the likes of Breel Embolo and Marcus Thuram are key players to their success this season as they’ve netted 17 of their 33 goals so far this campaign.
But for the Foals to get back on top, they need to focus on their main identity – which is their formidable defence. They are the top team in terms of goals conceded with only 21 as of this writing.
Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is their captain at the back and he tallied five clean sheets already while Nico Elvedi, Matthias Ginter, and Stefan Lainer run a tight ship.
Another interesting statistic to look at in favour of Gladbach is their ability to bounce back. They have picked up 12 points this season from games in which they’ve trailed 1-0.
History
RB Leipzig have gotten the better of Borussia Monchengladbach in their recent matchups as they’ve yet to lose in their seven previous encounters (W5, D2).
Goals are hard to come by for the Foals when matched up against the Red Bulls as they’ve churned out a putrid average of 0.3 goals per game.
Interestingly, the Julian Nagelsmann-mentored club has only lost once on a Saturday game this term. (W9, D2).
Betting Tip
RB Leipzig vs Borussia Monchengladbach | Total Goal 2-3 @ 2.14 | |
February 2, 01:30 (GMT+8) |
Our Bundesliga 2020 odds point to a win for RB Leipzig as they are placed at 1.54. Borussia Monchengladbach are at 5.20, and chances of a draw are at 4.40 based in the 1×2 market. However, I don’t expect the Red Bulls to pull away easy here since Gladbach can keep up with them.
Goals are expected to be scored by both sides here, so I’m betting for this game to generate at least two to three goals.
This match should be as tight and intense as they come since this will pose huge ramifications in the title race.
