The 2019/20 Bundesliga season may be on hold for now, but recent developments suggest that the league might resume sooner than later.
Could it be true since the league has a huge dilemma on their hands amidst the coronavirus pandemic?
Well, several reports indicate that teams such as Bayern Munich have started to conduct practices over these past few days as they are still anticipating a return to the pitch sometime in May.
It can be noted that the top flight football league in Germany has been suspended since mid-March until at least at the end of April.
This is somewhat a welcome development especially since Germany has been really affected with COVID-19. As of this writing, Germany has around 103,000 confirmed cases along with 1,800 deaths and 36,081 recoveries.
If ever the season will resume soon, it is expected that the league will impose strict measures in the games – meaning that matches are to be played behind closed doors and players will be under observation at all times.
But how would the league look like assuming it will be back to regular programming come May? Together with SBOBET, let’s take a look at the current Bundesliga landscape.
Pretenders or contenders?
Two sides in Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig have been pleasant surprises this season as they took turns in leading the Bundesliga table, and that begs the question on whether they are championship pretenders or contenders this term.
My colleagues took time in analysing these two squads and eventually came up with the conclusion that RB Leipzig looks to be a contender while the same can’t be said for Borussia Monchengladbach.
For the Red Bulls, their youth movement under Julian Nagelsmann has done wonders with the likes of Timo Werner, Marcel Sabitzer, and Christopher Nkunku spearheading the attack. They have formed a lethal attacking combination that can produce a ton of Bundesliga 2020 highlights.
After a tough loss against Schalke to start the season, RB Leipzig found their form by leading the table in two separate occasions. And while they’ve been leapfrogged by Bayern Munich as of the moment, only five points separate between the two.
But perhaps a testament to RB Leipzig’s readiness is their participation in the Champions League. So far this term, the Red Bulls made history by advancing to as far as they’ve ever been when they knocked off Tottenham in the first round.
For the Foals, however, while they have done a good job too this season, inconsistency has haunted them in key stretches.
When faced against the big boys in Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, Marco Rose’s side tend to falter. They still have more work to do in that regard, but a top-four finish is very likely for them this campaign.
How about the bottom feeders?
While Werder Bremen and Paderborn sure to be relegated after this season, the third relegation spot will have to be settled sooner or later should the league resume.
Fortuna currently hold the final relegation spot and for sure teams like Mainz and Augsburg aren’t too envious.
Augsburg in particular have had a troubling form prior to the league’s postponement since they have yet to win a single match since the start of February.
Mainz too experienced some tough times to start the year when they struggled to get wins, which is why their victories against Hertha BSC and Paderborn are probably the reasons why they’re still afloat.
Four points is only the difference between being relegated or staying in top flight, so anything can still happen for the remainder of the season.
Can Bayern Munich win it all once more?
After an up-and-down season, Bayern Munich found themselves at the top as they are touted to win the championship once more according to our Bundesliga 2020 odds.
They have been dominant for quite some time now – winning 12 of their last 13 – and they are peaking at the right time.
With opposing defences keying in on slowing down Robert Lewandowski, other players took on the challenge in supplying goals for the Bavarians.
In their match against Hoffenheim, five players have scored for Bayern Munich. Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Joshua Zirkzee, Leon Goretzka, and Philippe Coutinho have filled in well for the then-injured Robert Lewandowski.
At the same time, Bayern’s backline has been phenomenal as they didn’t concede a single goal in their past four matches in all competitions.
Replacing Niko Kovac with Hansi Flick has paid dividends as the latter has done a superb job in building relationships with his players. But more importantly, the club’s youngsters have been thriving under his tutelage.
His efforts have earned for himself a long-term deal with the club. And with the way they’re playing prior to the suspension, the Bavarians are primed to come out with their eighth straight crown.
That is, however, if the Bundesliga will be up and running again next month.
