Bundesliga: Unbeaten Freiburg Face Ultimate Test at Bayern

Bayern Munich vs SC Freiburg

Bayern Munich are set to host SC Freiburg this weekend in a battle between first and third place in the Bundesliga table. While Bayern are leading the standings once again, Freiburg are flying high in third after 10 rounds and are the only team left in the German top-flight that has yet to taste defeat.

However, that unbeaten record will be put to the ultimate test in Bavaria as they face the reigning German champions at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern have been banging in the goals of late, and the Bundesliga 2021 betting odds have them as big favourites to finally snap Freiburg’s impressive unbeaten run.

Talking Points

Bayern keep banging in the goals

Bayern Munich will face third place SC Freiburg in Bundesliga
Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann during their recent Champions League win

Bayern Munich just keep scoring goals at the moment. They smashed Benfica 5-2 in the Champions League, their second straight 5-2 win after their shock 5-0 defeat to Gladbach in the DFB-Pokal. It’s the fifth time in six games Bayern have scored at least four goals.

Robert Lewandowski banged in a hat-trick against Benfica and could have had four had he not missed a penalty. The prolific Pole has now scored five goals in his last two games.

Leroy Sane also continued his fine form of late. The German international winger has four goals and two assists in his last four starts.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is back on the sideline after isolating due to Covid. He fielded more or less a full-strength side against Benfica, with Thomas Muller and Lucas Hernandez the lone exceptions.

The magnificent Muller, who already has seven assists in the league, only came on as a substitute and will likely start on the weekend. Meanwhile, Hernandez is dealing with a foot injury, but it does not appear to be too serious.

It remains to be seen whether Nagelsmann will make more changes to his squad ahead of the international break.

Freiburg remain in fine form

Freiburg’s fantastic start just keeps going and going. They followed up their 2-0 win away to Wolfsburg – which led to the sacking of Wolves boss Mark van Bommel – with a comfortable 3-1 home win over bottom side Greuther Fuerth last time out.

Vincenzo Grifo starred as he scored from the penalty spot and supplied an assist to Lucas Holer. Grifo and Holer are now tied with young South Korean star Jeong Woo-Yeong as the team’s co-leading scorers with three goals apiece.

Freiburg do not possess the array of attacking firepower that can produce beautiful Bundesliga 2021 highlights like Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund, but they still find themselves in the top three thanks to their impressive defence. They have conceded just seven goals in their first 10 games – the best defensive record in the league by far.

However, Freiburg – who usually play in a 3-4-3 formation – are a bit vulnerable defending out on the wings, which Bayern’s terrific wingers and full-backs could exploit. Freiburg left wing-back and captain Christian Gunter is the team’s biggest chance creator – he already has three assists this season – but he will have to do a good deal of defending against Bayern.

History

Bayern have quite simply dominated Freiburg in recent years. In the last 22 meetings between the two clubs, Bayern have won 16 to Freiburg’s one, with five draws. That lone Freiburg win came at home in 2015.

Bayern beat Freiburg 2-1 in this fixture last season thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller. But Freiburg fought back from a goal down twice to draw 2-2 in the reverse fixture at home.

Lewandowski has terrific goalscoring records against many teams in the Bundesliga, and Freiburg is no different. He has scored 19 goals in 18 games against them, including six in his last five games.

Betting Tip

??
Bayern Munich vs SC Freiburg Over 3.50 @ 1.66
November 06, 10:30 (GMT+8)

SBOTOP odds have Bayern pegged as overwhelming 1.19 favourites to pick up another big home win. Freiburg are heavy 10.50 underdogs away from home, while a draw is at 7.40.

While Freiburg are a fine defensive side, facing an in-form Bayern side will be an entirely different proposition. Lewandowski is in phenomenal form at the moment, and he will be keen to add to his impressive tally against Freiburg.

Expect there to be a good number of goals at the Allianz Arena, with Bayern scoring most, if not all of them en route to another big win.
