Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig
The back-and-forth between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for this year’s Bundesliga title can come to an end this weekend, and the former will win it all once again if certain things fall into place.
With two matchdays left, Bayern Munich are still on top, leading by one point over Borussia Dortmund. If they win against RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund somehow lose to Augsburg, then the Meisterschale will go back to Bavaria.
But if it’s the other way around, then Borussia Dortmund will have a two-point lead heading into the final week.
Thomas Tuchel’s side will take on an RB Leipzig team that is on a three-game winning streak. The Red Bulls are currently in third place with 60 points, and a win here would be a big step towards confirming their Champions League berth next season.
Talking Points
Bayern’s wing duo can put them over the line
Since losing against Mainz in late April, Bayern Munich have been on a winning streak, which surely helped in their repeat bid. In their last three games, they have scored 10 goals while only conceding one.
Serge Gnabry ended his goal drought in their 2-0 win against Hertha Berlin following the Mainz loss, and then he scored once against Werder Bremen and two more in their 6-0 victory over Schalke on Saturday.
Gnabry now leads the team in scoring with 15 goals, and he has seven assists. 13 of his 15 total goals are in the Bundesliga, and he is now joint-third in the league’s Golden Boot race this season.
Another player who deserves a shoutout is his fellow German winger, Leroy Sane. Sane scored his 12th goal of the season against Werder Bremen to become the team’s third-leading scorer.
The improvement in form for both Gnabry and Sane couldn’t have come at a better time, as we’re approaching the latter stages of the 2022-23 season. Head coach Thomas Tuchel can rely on these two to deliver, especially with Sadio Mane falling out of his rotation.
Sadio Mane was supposed to be the ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski when he joined Bayern Munich. However, things have not gone according to plan for the ex-Liverpool man due to injuries and disciplinary issues, including his dust-up with Sane last month.
Mane is rumoured to leave Bayern Munich this summer after joining them last year, but the team wouldn’t mind selling him, especially with Gnabry and Sane creating Bundesliga 2023 highlights.
One last push for RB Leipzig
The Red Bulls couldn’t care less about the ongoing title battle between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. At this point, they would rather focus on securing their top four spot before turning their attention towards their DFB-Pokal final against Eintracht Frankfurt next month.
Clinching their passage to the Champions League while winning the DFB-Pokal would be the perfect ending to Christopher Nkunku’s RB Leipzig career, as he is set to join Chelsea this summer.
Nkunku is the team’s top scorer with 16 goals, with 13 of those in the Bundesliga, making him the joint-third placer in the Golden Boot race alongside Serge Gnabry and Marcus Thuram.
Against Bayern Munich, Nkunku will be joined up front by Timo Werner, while Emil Forsberg and Dominik Szoboszlai are going to play ancillary roles in the attack.
History
Bayern Munich have had RB Leipzig’s number, as they’ve only lost once in their 16 competitive games so far (W9, D6), with their last loss being a 2-1 away league game in March 2018. Since then, RB Leipzig have yet to win a game in this fixture, their longest winless streak against any particular side.
The Bavarians have scored at least once in their last 56 home Bundesliga matches, and the last team that stopped them from doing so was the Red Bulls in February 2020 in a goalless draw.
The last meeting between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig ended in a 1-1 draw in January. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting put Bayern Munich ahead in the 37th minute, but Marcel Halstenberg scored the equaliser for RB Leipzig 15 minutes after halftime.
Betting Tip
Bayern Munich are the heavy favourites to win this Saturday because they’ll be playing at home. The SBOTOP Bundesliga 2023 odds have them winning at 1.51, whereas RB Leipzig are priced at 5.20, and a draw is at 4.10 in the 1X2 market.
A replay of their reverse fixture, Correct Score 1-1, is in the cards with a generous payout of 9.00, but the sure bet here is going for Total Goal 2-3 at 2.27.
