The Bundesliga tie between Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund is an interesting one because it is essentially a clash of styles.

Goals have been rare for Union Berlin at the start of the 2024-25 campaign. But, on the other hand, it is quite the opposite for Borussia Dortmund.

Despite this, the gap between these two sides is not that big. The visitors may be the fifth seed with 10 points, but they only lead by two against their hosts, who are currently ninth at the table.

A win for BVB could see them go up at the top of the table, depending on this weekend’s run of games. On the other hand, the same result for Die Eisernen could see them break into the Top 4.

Talking Points

Union Berlin lacking firepower

After barely escaping relegation last season, Union Berlin plan to return to European football, and they’re hoping that this is the year.

However, to do so, they must do much better in the final third since they’ve only found the back of the net four times while conceding three goals on the other end so far this term.

Benedict Hollerbach, Laszlo Benes, Tom Rothe, and Jeong Woo-Yeong have one league goal each for Union Berlin. Meanwhile, Jordan Pefok has yet to score, although he already has one assist.

To try and compensate for their lack of offence, Union Berlin completed the free agent signing of Robert Skov, formerly of Hoffenheim.

Skov is an experienced campaigner here in the Bundesliga, and the 28-year-old is a solid option at wing-back. He has yet to make his debut for Die Eisernen, and there’s a chance he’ll finally make his first appearance for the club this weekend.

Overall, a Top 10 finish is the best-case scenario for Union Berlin, who continue to rebuild under head coach Bo Svensson.

 

Guirassy settling in nicely at Borussia Dortmund

Serhou Guirassy has picked up where he left off last season, when he finished second behind Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race with 26 league goals.

Here with his new team Borussia Dortmund, the Guinea international now has six goals in all competitions, three in the Bundesliga and three in the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund are one of the highest-scoring teams in the Bundesliga with 11 goals, and they’re coming off a 7-1 blowout victory against Celtic in the Champions League.

Four BVB players were on the scoresheet, as Emre Can, Karim Adeyemi, Serhou Guirassy, and Felix Nmecha all found the back of the net.

Even if Nuri Sahin rotates his squad for the Union Berlin match, Borussia Dortmund should find themselves back in the Bundesliga 2024 highlights reel given their weapons.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi are also in rhythm for Nuri Sahin and co., while Donyell Malen, Maximilian Beier, and Julien Duranville are additional options off the bench.

Borussia Dortmund completed a league double over Union Berlin last season, winning 4-2 and 2-0 in October and March for an aggregate tally of 6-2.

The last time Union Berlin defeated Borussia Dortmund was a 2-0 result at home on October 2022.

Karim Adeyemi recently made history for the Yellow Wall, as he became the first BVB player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2017) and Robert Lewandowski (2013).

The 22-year-old forward was also the first BVB player to do so in the first half against Celtic, making him the one to watch besides Serhou Guirassy.
