Bundesliga: Frankfurt Unlikely to Arrest Their Skid When Bayern Visit Town

Eintracht Frankfurt are suddenly on a freefall after an okay start to the 2023-24 campaign. Although they’re right where they were at the end of last season, sitting in seventh place in the Bundesliga standings, that won’t cut it if they have plans to make it back to Europe next year.

With only one win in their last five league matches, Die Adler are on a barren run of Bundesliga 2023 results, and such a trend might continue when the defending champions pay them a visit on Saturday.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are on a huge winning streak in the German top-flight but are still in second place behind Bayer Leverkusen.

But Thomas Tuchel’s men can go back on top if they defeat Dino Toppmoller’s boys and if Die Werkself somehow manage to drop points again.

Trapp needs additional cover at the back and support up front

A key reason why Eintracht Frankfurt are in a slump is because of their porous defence, which has conceded 10 goals in their last five matches across all competitions.

This has happened under Kevin Trapp’s watch, which isn’t necessarily his fault since he has done his bit to prevent certain goals against Die Adler.

The numbers speak for themselves. Despite their recent slump, Die Adler boast the fourth-best defencive record in the German top-flight, with only 15 goals conceded.

And individually, Kevin Trapp is the third-best in the league in terms of shots-to-save ratio at 74-per cent – putting him behind only Bayer Leverkusen’s Lukas Hradecky (77-per cent) and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer (78-per cent).

But still, their backline leaves a lot to be desired since Leeds United loanee Robin Koch has yet to fulfill his full potential, while Tuta and Willian Pacho are both inexperienced, with the former aged 24 and the latter aged 22.

And up front, they have been subpar too.

Omar Marmoush has been the bright spot because he is doing his best to fill in the shoes of Randal Kolo Muani, who left for PSG this summer, with 10 goals and one assist.

But besides Marmoush, his fellow attackers like Ellyes Skhiri and Junior Dina Ebimbe have yet to pick up steam, with both combining for seven goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season.

Bayern Munich finally have fresher legs

Rest is not often in Bayern Munich’s vocabulary since they typically compete on multiple fronts, which is why it’s weird that they don’t have a game in nine days.

Bayern Munich were slated to compete against Union Berlin last weekend, but the game was moved to January 24, 2024 due to the inclement weather.

There was heavy snowfall in Munich, so the league committee rightfully decided not to push the match through, and refunds were issued to the ticket buyers.

With more time to rest, Thomas Tuchel is expected to have a healthier squad against Die Adler. The hope for them is that both Jamal Musiala and Matthijs de Ligt will be 100-per cent fit come Saturday.

History

Eintracht Frankfurt have suffered the most home losses against Bayern Munich at the highest level (L19). In their previous meeting at Deutsche Bank Park last year, Die Adler lost 6-1 to Die Bayern, which is their heaviest Bundesliga home loss in the 21^st century.

Die Adler have now suffered back-to-back home losses across all competitions for the first time since September 2022 following defeats against VfB Stuttgart and PAOK (both 2-1) after having lost only two of the previous 26.

Bayern Munich have actually made their joint-third-best start to a Bundesliga campaign, with 32 points after the first 12 matchdays (same as in 2013-14). The last time they had better starts was in 2015-16 (34 points) and 1980-81 (33 points).

With six wins in a row, the Bavarian juggernauts are on their best run of games since they won 14 consecutive matches under Hansi Flick in 2020.
