Bundesliga: Mainz and VfB Stuttgart Might Give Us Another Goalfest

The Bundesliga contest between Mainz and VfB Stuttgart is one of the matches to look out for on matchday 19 of the 2024-25 campaign, as both teams can put up numerous Bundesliga 2025 highlights at the MEWA Arena this Saturday night. And these two teams are not far from each other in the German top-flight standings.

Mainz are in sixth place with 28 points. Bo Henriksen’s men are on a two-game losing streak after losing against Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin, and they’re in danger of falling out of the European places if they don’t get their act together fast.

Meanwhile, VfB Stuttgart are two notches above their hosts. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side has 32 points and is holding on to the last Champions League berth. The team is on a three-game winning streak and is fresh from a 3-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League yesterday.

Mainz sweating on the fitness of their star striker

Jonathan Burkardt recently suffered a thigh injury, and it’s no coincidence Mainz dropped their last two matches without him. The 24-year-old striker had to leave in the third minute against Bayer Leverkusen, and he didn’t even play at all against Union Berlin last weekend.

​Burkardt is listed as doubtful for the VfB Stuttgart game, and he is a huge loss for the 05ers because he is their top scorer. With 12 league goals under his belt, Burkardt is joint-third (alongside Patrik Schick) in the Bundesliga Golden Boot race, with only Omar Marmoush (15 goals) and Harry Kane (16 goals) above him. Armindo Sieb will likely take Burkardt’s place in the starting XI, with Lee Jae-Sung and Paul Nebel behind him.

Nadiem Amiri will also play a pivotal role for Mainz, as he is one of their best players. The 28-year-old attacking midfielder has four goals and two assists. Head coach Bo Henriksen also encourages his full-backs to join in the attack, and Philipp Mwene and Anthony Caci have four assists each this term.

 

Woltemade grabbing the limelight at VfB Stuttgart

Nick Woltemade was one of the nominees for the Bundesliga Player of the Month for December 2024 because of his impact on VfB Stuttgart, accounting for three of their six goals scored. He missed the monthly award, but Woltemade has carried over his positive form this month by scoring two more goals against RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg.

The 22-year-old forward has six league goals and one assist, and he has formed a solid partnership up front with top scorer Ermedin Demirovic. Because he is in form, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß can afford to interchange Woltemade and Deniz Undav in the final third however he sees fit. I am guessing that Hoeneß will continue to ride Woltemade’s hot hand, with Undav coming off the bench against Mainz.

Besides Woltemade, Mainz will also have their hands full on slowing down Angelo Stiller, Maximilian Mittelstadt, Fabian Rieder, and Enzo Millot, who have combined for 13 assists this season.

Mainz and VfB Stuttgart have already faced off earlier this season. During matchday 2 last August, these two sides shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw at the MHPArena. Enzo Millot, Jamie Leweling, and Fabian Rieder scored for VfB Stuttgart, and Nadiem Amiri, Jonathan Burkardt, and Maxim Leitsch scored for Mainz.

VfB Stuttgart are undefeated against Mainz in the previous nine Bundesliga games (W6, D3), the longest streak against any other current Bundesliga side. Mainz’s last win in this fixture was a 3-2 result at the MHPArena in January 2019.

Mainz recently won four consecutive Bundesliga home matches for the first time in two years, and they aim to make it five in a row for the first time since the 2021-22 season. However, VfB Stuttgart won their last two league away matches.
