Bundesliga: No Slacking Now for Bayern or Eintracht

Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Having given up the Bundesliga title they held for 11 years, it’s time for Bayern Munich to dust themselves off and get ready for the visit of Eintracht Frankfurt.

It’s all about holding on to what you have for these two teams. The league is lost for Bayern, and they are only three points ahead of third placed VfB Stuttgart. Frankfurt are in sixth and 12 points behind the Champions League places and with a five-point cushion over SC Freiburg.

This clash, Bundesliga: Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt is a chance for both to cement their positions. Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern can at least make sure they finish second to runaway winners Bayer Leverkusen, while Dino Toppmoller’s Eagles can keep hold of their Europa place and better their finishing position of seventh last year.

Both come into the game on the back of a victory. Bayern won 5-1 away to Union Berlin while Frankfurt ended a poor run of Bundesliga 2024 results with a 3-1 home win over Augsburg, but the Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt betting odds are pointing firmly to a home win, so the Eagles’ brief improvement may be about to meet an abrupt end.

Talking Points

Tuchel’s Euro focus

With the league and the DFB POKAL gone for Bayern, there is just one competition left to save their season, and all thoughts will be on the Champions League, where they have been matched up with Real Madrid, conquerors of holders, and tournament favourites Manchester City.

Tuchel’s team came through a tough quarterfinal tie, beating the highly fancied Arsenal, and the former Chelsea manager would love to leave Munich with the European crown.

He’s on his way at the end of the season, and reports in the UK press have revealed that Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe has held talks with Tuchel.

A Champions League win would seriously improve his chances if he fancies the Old Trafford gig. And, interestingly, former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick is apparently in the running to replace Tuchel as Bayern boss, so that’s a story to keep your eyes on.

The other fascinating subplot to Bayern’s under par season is the prolific form of summer marquee signing Harry Kane, who scored his 33rd league goal in the destruction of Union Berlin. Kane left Tottenham Hotspur in search of trophies, and he might just have joined the Bavarians in their first potless campaign in recent memory.

Kane is sure to score more in the last five games, and with the help of Leroy Sane, who has made 11 assists, he has a ready supply of ammunition.

Marmoush is in demand

Eintracht are still in a European tussle, and with this tough assignment on Saturday the five point cushion they have could quickly be reduced to three, or even two, if they lose, with Freiburg, Augsburg and TSG Hoffenheim all in the hunt.

The win over Augsburg, in front of 57,000 grateful fans was a huge result, and it was their top scorer, Omar Marmoush, who bagged the Eagles’ crucial third goal to kill the game.

The Egyptian hitman, with 11 goals and eight assists this season, is in the best form of his career and at 25 years of old is approaching his prime. His form has attracted the attention of a host of top clubs, but the Eagles are keen to hold on to him and will ask for a fee of around 50 million euros from any suitors.

European football might be enough to persuade their star to stay in Frankfurt for another year, but should the Eagles slip out of the top seven, interest from the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham might be enough to turn Marmoush’s head.

Another man primed to feature heavily in the Bundesliga 2024 highlights is experienced Germany winger Mario Gotze.

The 31-year-old is another key player for the Eagles; he can play on the flank or as an attacking midfielder, and he has the guile and technique to work out openings for himself.

History

With 35 wins to 11 and ten draws, Bayern have bossed the head-to-head meetings with Frankfurt, though they took a right royal slapping in December when Eintracht won 5-1. It was Bayern’s first defeat of the campaign, and it gave Leverkusen a three-point lead at the top of the table.

The corresponding fixture in Munich last season ended in a 1-1 draw.

With three wins, one draw, and two defeats from the last six, the Bavarians have the better form than Frankfurt’s two wins, two draws, and two defeats.

More recently, Bayern have won their last three, while the Eagles have just won a first game in five, and the deposed champions have still had a strong season at home, winning 12 drawing one and losing two on their own turf.

Betting Tip

Bayern are hot favourites to win this game at odds of 1.37, with the draw at 4.82 and a Frankfurt victory at SBOTOP odds of 6.00. I’m inclined to agree and expect at least a two goal margin…with King Kane to score at least one.
