Bundesliga: SC Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart Both Seeking Their First Victory in 2022

SC Freiburg vs VfB Stuttgart

SC Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart have yet to win in the Bundesliga this 2022, and one of them can return on the winning track when they’ll renew their hostilities at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday.

Both are fresh from brutal defeats against Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig respectively, so a victory here would give them additional points that will boost their morale.

Because of their tough stretch recently, Die Breisgauer have fallen to sixth in the Bundesliga standings with 30 points after placing as high as the third spot before. It’s an open secret that Christian Streich is aiming for a Champions League spot for his boys, and they’re still within arm’s length of reaching their goal.

VfB Stuttgart, meanwhile, are at second to the last with 18 points – which is a far cry from their solid campaign last term. Pellegrino Matarazzo has his work cut out for him in trying to guide his side out of the drop zone and now is the time for them to make a run.

Talking Points

Bright youngsters lead the way for SC Freiburg

Compared to teams like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to where they have stars who can create Bundesliga 2022 highlights, SC Freiburg’s success is rooted by their collective effort.

Die Breisgauer are playing an unselfish brand of football, which has resulted to different players being featured in their top scorer list.

Vincenzo Grifo is their main attacking threat with four goals and six assists and he shares the same goal total with the likes of Lucas Holer, Jeong Woo-Yeong, and Philipp Lienhart.

Other than their improving attack, SC Freiburg’s work on the defencive end has been well-known too since they’ve only conceded 23 goals as of this writing – good for third best in the league.

Other than Philipp Lienhart, another key piece to their backline is Nico Schlotterbeck – who is widely considered as one of the hottest products in Bundesliga. The 22-year-old defender has been linked to Newcastle United and Bayern Munich.

Following a sound beating by Borussia Dortmund last Saturday, SC Freiburg have a lighter schedule ahead of them since two of their next three league games are against teams who are at the bottom half of the table.

In-form Sasa Kalajdzic is the missing piece for VfB Stuttgart

VfB Stuttgart don’t look like the same team as last season because of injuries. In fact, they’ve used 31 different players over their first 17 games – which is more than any other side in German top-flight.

Scoring has been their main problem as their current forwards couldn’t seem to get it going. Die Schwaben’s top scorers so far are actually their two centre-backs in Konstantinos Mavrapanos and Marc Oliver Kempf, who have four and three respectively.

It’s clear that Die Schwaben need more help up front. And surely, the return of Sasa Kalajdzic should give them huge a boost.

The towering Austrian has missed games due to a dislocated shoulder that he sustained in their Matchday 2 loss at RB Leipzig. Prior to the injury, Kalajdzic was a revelation for VfB Stuttgart last term with 16 goals in 33 league appearances.

History

SC Freiburg will be aiming to start a new trend in their head-to-heads against VfB Stuttgart.

VfB Stuttgart may hold the highest win rate against SC Freiburg on the road in the Bundesliga at 42-per cent. However, they are winless in their last two visits at the Europa-Park Stadion.

Die Breisgauer have had Die Schwaben’s number lately as they’ve won three straight against them in the league. They’ve only managed to do this for the first time since 1994.

Their previous meeting took place in August where Die Breisgauer secured a 3-2 victory as Jeong Woo-Yeong listed a brace and Lucas Holer added one to give their club the lead for good. Konstantinos Mavropanos and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui scored one goal apiece for VfB Stuttgart in the losing effort.

Betting Tip

??
SC Freiburg vs VfB StuttgartSC Freiburg Asian Handicap -0.25 @ 1.70
January 22, 22:30 (GMT+8)

SC Freiburg are the favoured team in the SBOTOP Bundesliga 2022 odds. Die Breisgauer are tipped to win at 1.95, while VfB Stuttgart are priced at 3.95 and chances for a draw are at 3.25 in the 1X2 market.

Christian Streich’s side may have hit a rough patch recently, but the fact that they’re on a cusp at a spot in Europe says a lot about their quality compared to their visitors.

Die Schwaben will certainly bring their A-game to keep their top-flight hopes alive, though, so Die Breisgauer cannot afford to be complacent.
