It was the most dramatic ending to the Bundesliga season.
That was the climax but there were plenty of Bundesliga highlights, not just last Saturday but throughout the campaign.
As a result, it was certainly not a straightforward choice for inclusion in my team of the season, but here goes:
Gregor Kobel – Borussia Dortmund
The Swiss shot stopper has had a fine season on the whole and has been a safe pair of hands as the last line of a defence which had a number of standout performers. If Dortmund’s title bid had been successful, no-one would have begrudged him.
Jeremie Frimpong – Bayer Leverkusen
The lightning-fast Dutchman may nominally be a right-back but, in reality, he was here, there and everywhere. That is what I read earlier this week and it is so true.
In fact, he has the stats to prove it, having a direct hand in 15 league goals this season, including eight of his own. He was also a key figure in their run to the Europa League semi-finals.
Raphael Guerreiro – Borussia Dortmund
In his final season at the club, Guerreiro truly delivered.
He topped the divisional assist charts with 12 – plus four goals – from what was originally left-back but also converted into a central midfield rolw. After seven years at the club, he will be missed when he heads to pastures new, possibly Atletico Madrid.
Nico Schlotterbeck – Borussia Dortmund
Winning 66 percent of his challenges across the season, the Dortmund defender has officially been the best tackler of the Bundesliga this term. With his determined character and relentless playing style, he has quickly earned a place in the hearts of BVB fans, also making an impact at the other end with four goals and four assists apiece.
Dominik Szoboszlai – RB Leipzig
One of the best talents to come out of Hungary for some time as far as I am aware.
The young Hungarian winger was directly involved in 14 league goals this season, registering eight assists, to help Leipzig claim third place.
Jude Bellingham – Borussia Dortmund
Going into the final day of the season, the SBOTOP Bundesliga betting odds suggested he would end as a title winner.
Not so, but it could well have been different if injury had not ruled him out of the last-day clash.
The newly crowned Bundesliga Player of the Season, it is hard to forget here is a player who is aged just 19, yet possesses leadership skills beyond his years.
He started all but three of his team’s 34 Bundesliga fixtures and was even trusted with the captain’s armband on two occasions.
Jamal Musiala – Bayern Munich
It never ceases to be a treat to watch Bayern star Jamal Musiala.
German football’s leading youngster delivered an impressive 12 goals and 10 assists and was voted Bayern’s player of the month four times alone in the first half of the season. He saved his best until last, of course, netting what turned out to be the Bundesliga clincher.
Moussa Diaby – Bayer Leverkusen
His link up with Frimpong was one of the reasons behind Leverkusen’s progress under the management of Xabi Alonso. Nine goals and eight assists made him a natural fit into my selection.
Randal Kolo Muani – Eintracht Frankfurt
The ferocious Frankfurt forward has excelled domestically and on the wider stage.
Cast your mind back to little over five months ago and you may recall only a strong save prevented him from scoring the winning goal in a World Cup Final.
Fifteen goals and 11 assists all told meant the French striker was the most prolific player in the division for a team that reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first ever time. He could yet cap off a superb season by winning the German Cup as Frankfurt meet Leipzig this weekend.
Niclas Fullkrug – Werder Bremen
The league’s joint top goalscorer as he became the fifth Bremen player to be crowned the Bundesliga’s leading marksman after Rudi Völler (1983), Mario Basler (1995), Ailton (2004) and Miroslav Klose (2006).
That he achieved that feat while playing in a team at the bottom end of the table adds weight to his achievements.
His goals certainly ensured they staved off relegation as he picked up where he left off following a commendable World Cup.
Christopher Nkunku – RB Leipzig
A player whose statistics caught my eye a year ago and the only surviving member of my Bundesliga XI from last season. Nkunku shared the top scorer accolade with Fullkrug and probably would have been out on his own but for a pre-World Cup injury. That meant he only made 25 league appearances over the course of the season, although the France international was not to be denied a share of the Torjägerkanone.
