BVB Storm to 2019 DFL Supercup Victory

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund won the DFL Supercup at the Signal Iduna Park with a 2-0 win over fierce rivals FC Bayern thanks to two second-half goals from Paco Alcacer and Jadon Sancho.

It was a hard-fought win for die Schwarzgelben as the league champions attacked for much of the game, but they defended resolutely and struck with venom.

Lucien Favre has spent heavily over the summer in an attempt to put a squad together capable of winning the Bundesliga, and there were signs tonight that they will push Bayern all the way again.

The passionate BVB fans will be watching the DFL Supercup 2019 highlights a few times this week, that’s for sure!

Highlights of the game

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus is hopeful his manager’s investments will push the team on to greater heights, and he’s certainly a skipper who leads from the front.

Paco Alcacer scores a second-half goal to give BVB an edge over Bayern Munich in their DFL Supercup clash

Playing alongside Paco Alcacer in attack, he had the first shot on goal. He took a pass from Raphael Guerreiro and fired on target, but Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer was alert to the danger and tipped his shot over the bar.

Alcacer then had a speculative effort from around 40 yards but that flew wide. After the hosts’ quick start, Bayern began to get into the game. In the visitors’ first meaningful attack Robert Lewandowski had a shot blocked, and Thomas Muller headed just over from the resulting corner.

Guerreiro forced Neuer into a regulation save after Reus had put him in. And at the other end, Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman both had shots charged down

As the Bavarians moved up a gear, Muller crossed and Lewandowski’s header was saved by Marwin Hitz.

The BVB keeper was called on to make a better save when Joshua Kimmich crossed and Leon Goretzka headed towards the top corner from point-blank range only to see Hitz stretch to keep his effort out.

The hosts were a little lucky to go into the half-time break level, but things got even better minutes after the restart when they went ahead.

Jadon Sancho passed to Alcacer, who was in space just outside the penalty area. He fired his shot low and hard into the bottom left corner to send the Yellow Wall into raptures.

Having gone ahead, die Schwarzgelben immediately came under the cosh again. Goretzka forced a save from Hitz and Coman was denied three times in as many minutes.

The pick of Hitz’ saves on Coman came when the Frenchman directed a Joshua Kimmich cross towards the bottom corner. As the Bavarians’ frustration levels started to rise, Lewandowski picked up a yellow card for a nasty foul on the Dortmund keeper.

But things just got worse for the visitors when they went two behind on 69 minutes. As Borussia broke free, Guerreiro raced down the pitch slid the ball to Sancho, and the young England star beat the advancing Neuer to take the home fans to dreamland.

Bayern huffed and puffed in an attempt to claw their way back into the game. Lewandowski had a header saved and Goretzka fired a shot wide, but there was no joy for the visiting fans.

Key statistics

Bayern battled back from a two-goal deficit to draw with Spurs last week before losing the Audi Cup final on penalties, but this was a bridge too far.

The pre-match DFL Supercup 2019 betting odds here at SBOBET offered 3.40 on a BVB win. While they were under pressure for much of the game, they had the clinical edge to take the spoils.

Bayern dominated the first half and won the shot count by nine to three and three to two on target, and by the end of the game, they had seven shots on target to BVB’s two.

But the hosts’ victory has levelled up the head to head Supercup wins at 3-3 and that will do nicely for the Yellow Wall.

What’s next?

Ex-Bayern boss Pep Guardiola recently said the German Supercup has far higher standing than the English Community Shield. His Manchester City side takes on Liverpool tomorrow, but he has a point. The atmosphere in the Signal Iduna Park was electric tonight, and the win meant a whole lot to the hosts.

And the new league season is just around the corner. Bayern are seeking an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title having pipped BVB to the post last season. They open their campaign with a home match against Hertha Berlin.

Meanwhile, BVB start with a home game against FC Augsburg, and after this treat, the Schwarzgelben fans simply can’t wait.
