Coppa Italia: Double Delight for Nerazzurri

Lazio 0-2 Inter Milan

Just 10 days after winning Serie A for the second time in three years, Inter Milan have a league and cup double to savour.

Without needing to be anywhere near there best, they were far too strong for Lazio in Wednesday night’s Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico.

Two first-half goals means Inter have become the first Italian team since Juventus (eight years ago) to secure the double.

Lazio had their moments but, ultimately, it was a straightforward victory against a side they defeated in the league at the weekend.

What a superb first season at the helm for manager Cristian Chivu who now has a Scudetto and Coppa now in the trophy cabinet.

Highlights of the game

The SBOTOP Coppa Italia 2026 betting odds made the league champions big favourites and it took just 14 minutes for Inter to break the deadlock against opponents who seemed to be lacking in belief.

Marcus Thuram met a Federico Dimarco corner with his head but it was Lazio man Adam Marusic who nodded the ball into his own net.

If that was unfortunate for the club from the capital, what followed was self-destruct.

Ten minutes were remaining in the first half when Lazio full-back Nuno Tavares was caught dozing by Denzel Dumfries (later named man of the match) just outside the area and he ran forward before rolling the ball across for the prolific Argentine Lautaro Martinez to tap into an empty net.

If Tijjani Noslin’s drilled effort had gone in, instead of inches wide, just before the hour, Lazio could have been back in it.

Likewise, with quarter of an hour left, there was a chance to reduce the arrears when Manuel Lazzari’s ball over the top allowed Boulaye Dia to beat the offside tap, but the Senegal forward, with centre back Manuel Akanji making life difficult, saw Josep Martinez rush off his line and save the ball with his face.

That was as close as they got and Inter – who have won the last four meetings in Rome against Lazio by an emphatic 11-0 overall scoreline – almost grabbed a third when Thuram’s deflected pull-back found Piotr Zielinski who missed an open goal.

It didn’t matter as Inter had Coppa Italia 2026 highlights to cherish, while Lazio, who last won the cup in 2019 when managed by future Inter boss Simone Inzaghi, were left to ponder missing out on European qualification for a second straight season.

Their boss Maurizio Sarri, a beaten finalist in this tournament in 2020 (ironically against a Napoli team he helped transform and reemerge as a major footballing power in Italy’s top-flight during his tenure) said in his pre-match press conference that his Lazio players needed to focus on their mental approach.

They were far from overawed but as he sat out a touchline ban (his assistant Marco Ianni was on the bench), he could only watch on as the Biancocelesti rarely looked like salvaging their campaign or denying Inter a 10th Coppa Italia triumph.

That means the Nerazzurri can add a silver star to the jersey, just as 10 Serie A titles gives them a gold star in perpetuity.

Chivu deserves much credit since taking over from Inzaghi last summer, the man who did so much to bring Inter back to the top of the Italian game and make them a serious threat in Europe again.

They are kings of Italy once more.

Key Statistics

The result means that because Inter are already in the Champions League, fifth and sixth in Serie A will enter the Europa League next season, with seventh place valid for the Conference League.

Inter have now scored at least two goals in each of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Lazio have only won of their last 12 clashes with Inter.

They have won the Coppa Italia seven times, with only Juventus, AS Roma and Inter lifting the trophy more often.

What’s next?

Inter are back in action on Sunday afternoon (May 17) as they entertain already relegated Verona. It should be a party atmosphere as they receive the Serie A trophy.

It’s another big one for Lazio who meet city rivals Roma in the Derby della Capitale.

A row is currently ongoing as to when a number of this weekend’s top-flight matches will take place because the race for a Champions League spot is so tight, some argue the games featuring Roma, Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Como all have to be played simultaneously to ensure fairness.
