It’s Despair for Sunderland but Delight for Chelsea

After ten years in the top flight, Sunderland are relegated following defeat to Bournemouth as the Black Cats’ luck finally ran out.

They’ve had plenty of lives, defying betting odds with a miraculous escape last year, and playing many of their football games, for years, from the vantage point of around 17th place.

At the top Chelsea remain on track while many a football betting slip was torn up as Manchester United failed to beat relegation-threatened Swansea.

Sunderland 0-1 Bournemouth

David Moyes had nothing but praise for his team as they fought manfully for 90 minutes against Bournemouth. The Cherries are good in attack but Sunderland failed to breach their usually generous defence which tells us all we need to know. Josh King’s late strike sent the Black Cats down.

Everton 0-3 Chelsea

Blue is still the colour at the summit as Chelsea produced a blistering second half display to blow away the Toffees. Everton have been in great form at home and went in to half time level. But goals from Pedro, Gary Cahill and Willian capped a thoroughly professional performance.

Spurs 2-0 Arsenal

That piled the pressure on Spurs but Mauricio Pochettino’s men responded superbly with a 2-0 win over Arsenal. Dele Alli put the Whites in front before Harry Kane joined the trend of top players winning dubious penalties. Spurs fans won’t care about that, the Gunners will finish behind them for the first time in 22 years.

Watford 0-1 Liverpool

Emre Can hit a stunning overhead kick to win this for Liverpool with seconds of the first half remaining. Heurelho Gomes kept Watford in the game with a great save to deny Divock Origi, and that meant a nervy last half hour for the Reds. The win keeps them nicely in third place.

Manchester United 1-1 Swansea City

The Red Devils 24-match unbeaten run sounds impressive, but it’s been littered with underwhelming performances like this one. Relying on a Marcus Rashford dive to win a penalty, United were pegged back by a sublime Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick. Fernando Llorente missed a last-gasp sitter which could cost the relegation-threatened Swans dearly. That’s ten home draws at the Theatre of Dreams.

West Brom 0-1 Leicester City

The Foxes are safe after arch poacher Jamie Vardy continued his recent run of form with a clinical finish at the Hawthorns. The Baggies’ season seems to be petering out after a great effort to reach eighth; they haven’t scored in five games and have lost three on the bounce at home.

Crystal Palace 0-2 Burnley

It looks like the Clarets are safe too after a well-earned win at Crystal Palace. Ashley Barnes put the visitors in front on seven minutes before having a second ruled out for handball. Andre Gray came off the bench to fire a beauty on 85 minutes as Big Sam’s chewing speed escalated rapidly.

Southampton 0-0 Hull City

This shocking game came to life in the dying minutes as Hull Keeper Eldin Jakupovic saved a late Dusan Tadic penalty to win a crucial point for the Tigers, who remain two points ahead of Swansea. Oumar Niasse could have won it in the dying moments but his effort was cleared off the line.

Stoke City 0-0 West Ham

There was a holiday mood at Stoke where the safe Potters hosted West Ham and gave the visitors the point they needed to virtually guarantee safety. It’s been an odd season for the Hammers, struggling at home and beset by injuries so Slaven Bilic will need to invest wisely in the summer.
