It’s a desperate time for the Bundesliga chasers

Football betting results can’t get more hectic than this.

Bayern Munich won their last game while the entire chasing pack lost their respective matches. This puts quite a bit of distance between the Bavarians and the rest of the clubs in the league. This precarious situation makes almost all of the betting odds for this week carry significant weight.

Can anyone from the trailing group put a stop to Bayern Munich’s rampage?

WEEK 21 SATURDAY:

Augsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen eventually managed to bounce back after losing Hakan Calhanoglu to suspension with a dominating win against Frankfurt. They can start a late push for the Europa League slots if they manage to stomp Augsburg at the WWK Arena. With the hosts still recuperating from the injury bug, it’s high time for them to start a winning run.

Borussia Dortmund vs Wolfsburg

Dortmund’s painful defeats to Darmstadt and Benfica make the Bundesliga championship look out of reach for them. The BVB need to win their next game against Wolfsburg to keep themselves in the Champions League race. With his best defender in Sokratis suspended, Thomas Tuchel needs to stabilise his side’s defence to stop any surprise attacks from the Wolves.

This will be a tight affair, but I have a feeling this game will end in a draw. Consider Wolfsburg’s interesting odds of +1.00 @ 2.25.

Mainz 05 vs Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen can’t stop their skid and are now deeply embroiled in the relegation battle. Their away fixture against Mainz only spells bad news for Martin Schmidt’s lads, as the hosts haven’t lost a home game in four.

Hertha BSC vs Bayern Munich

Hertha Berlin are the only team standing between Bayern and complete domestic domination, so a win is a must for the Old Lady. That would be a tall order for the hosts as Bayern just handed Arsenal a humiliating 5-1 drubbing at the Allianz Arena. If the Bavarians get their way, they are well on their way to another championship.

I’d like to cheer for the underdogs, but my gut tells me to discard my sentiments as a -1.25 handicap for Bayern pays 1.98.

Hoffenheim vs Darmstadt 98

Darmstadt are still wallowing at the bottom of the table, but a thrilling win against Borussia Dortmund lit a fire inside the Lilies. While Hoffenheim are still tough opposition to take on, remember that they just suffered a stunner of their own against a Julian Draxler-less Wolfsburg. If they attack the right spots, they can begin a late charge to safety.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Ingolstadt

Leverkusen may have trumped Frankfurt last weekend, but they are still leaps and bounds better than the visiting Ingolstadt. Expecting anything other than a victory for the hosts can be considered a moral victory for Ingolstadt.

WEEK 21 SUNDAY:

Hamburger SV vs Freiburg

Markus Gisdol and Hamburg are one of the more feel-good stories of the Bundesliga season: after a terrible start, the Red Shorts were able to claw their way out of the drop zone and put some distance from the bottom three with a win at Leipzig. They should easily grab another three points against the inconsistent Freiburg.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs RB Leipzig

The Red Bulls are losing some of their mojo, with their shocking loss to lowly Hamburg the latest smear to their fairy-tale debut in the Bundesliga. Leipzig’s young core, led by Emil Forsberg, Naby Keita and Timo Werner, will be experiencing a similar struggle when they face the veteran-filled XI of Gladbach.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s young wards will have a hard time beating the experienced backline, and Gladbach’s winning form at the moment will be hard to beat. I think the hosts will end the weekend with a four-game winning streak, so consider punting for Monchengladbach with a -0.25 handicap for 2.25.

WEEK 21 MONDAY:

Koln vs Schalke 04

The last game for the weekend will be a sure cracker: Koln got booted out of the Europe slots due to consecutive losses against beatable opposition. Meanwhile, Schalke are enjoying some of their best football to date. This will be an interesting match as Anthony Modeste will try to outscore the opposition before their shabby defence buckles.
