DFB-Pokal: Leverkusen Look to Deny Bayern Another Double

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen

After securing a record eighth-straight Bundesliga title, Bayern Munich now set their sights on a domestic double as they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal final.

Bayern were picture-perfect after returning to action as they swept aside all in their path. Meanwhile, Leverkusen were far too inconsistent, which ultimately cost them a place in the Champions League.

They can still salvage their season by winning their first piece of silverware since 1993. However, the DFB-Pokal 2020 betting odds will be heavily against them as they face an in-form Bayern side that hasn’t tasted defeat in a long time.

Talking Points

Bayern’s brilliant winning run continues
Bayern Munich were simply unstoppable upon returning from the long suspension in play. They won all nine of their matches to run away with yet another Bundesliga title.

Much of the credit must go to head coach Hansi Flick, who has done an unbelievable job since taking over from Niko Kovac. Bayern have won 28 out of the 31 matches with Flick in charge.

Dating back to before the break, Bayern have now won an amazing 16 matches in a row in all competitions and 24 out of their last 25.

Robert Lewandowski has also been instrumental in Bayern’s success this year. The Polish striker scored a career-best 34 goals in just 31 Bundesliga games to lead the league in scoring for the fifth time in his career.

Lewi is now up to 50 goals on the season, with 10 of those goals coming in the nine games since the restart.

Thomas Muller also had an outstanding campaign for Bayern. The 30-year-old had eight goals and 21 assists, which broke Kevin de Bruyne’s record for most assists in a single Bundesliga season.

Meanwhile, there doesn’t seem to be any notable weakness anywhere in the side. Centre-back Jerome Boateng has rediscovered his best form after the restart, while Alphonso Davies has emerged as one of the best left-backs in the league.

Talented Leverkusen lose out on Champions League spot
Bayer Leverkusen missed out on their chance to make it back to the Champions League as they finished two points behind fourth-place Borussia Monchengladbach.
Leverkusen easily could have overtaken the Foals, but they threw away too many points after the restart. They won just five of their nine matches, with three defeats and one draw.

There’s no shame in losing to Bayern Munich at home, but they lost badly at home to Wolfsburg. They also drew away to strugglers Schalke and lost to Hertha Berlin in their penultimate match of the season.

Still, Leverkusen possess some remarkable attacking talent that can produce plenty of DFB-Pokal 2020 highlights on their day.

Kai Havertz finished the season strong with six goals in his last eight matches. Meanwhile, captain Kevin Volland looks back to his best after a lengthy injury layoff. Volland played all 90 minutes and scored the winning goal over Mainz in their season finale.

The pace of Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby will be a handful on the wings, and young Florian Wirtz has also proven he can make an impact. The 17-year-old became the Bundesliga’s youngest ever scorer when he scored a late consolation in Leverkusen’s recent 4-2 loss to Bayern.

History

Bayern Munich have had their way with Leverkusen in recent years. The Bavarians have won 18 out of their last 29 league meetings, with Leverkusen winning just five.

Although, Leverkusen had won back-to-back matches against Bayern — including one at the Allianz Arena earlier this season– before Bayern beat them 4-2 after the break. Leon Bailey scored three goals in those two wins, including a brace in Munich.

The two sides have also met three times in the DFB Pokal over the last decade. Bayern have won their two most recent meetings in 2015 and 2018 by an aggregate score of 11-5.

In terms of the Pokal, Bayern are record 19-time winners and have won it four out of the last seven years.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen are in only their fourth DFB-Pokal final. They won it all in 1993, which is their only major trophy to date. They lost in their other two trips to the final in 2002 and 2009.

Betting Tip

??
Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen Bayern Munich Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 1.84
July 5, 2:00 (GMT+8)

Unsurprisingly, the SBOBET odds are stacked heavily in Bayern’s favour. The Bavarians are massive 1.32 favourites to win, while Leverkusen have long 7.60 odds, and a draw is at 5.40.

It’s hard not to go with Bayern in the final. They’ve been so good since coming back, and with so much time to prepare for this match, Flick should have his side ready for anything Leverkusen throw at them.

Bayern beat Leverkusen by two clear goals in their meeting a few weeks ago, and I anticipate a similarly comfortable victory for the Bavarians in the final.
