Bayern Munich 3-2 Borussia Dortmund
A late Joshua Kimmich strike gave FC Bayern a DFL Super Cup victory over arch rivals Borussia Dortmund in a five goal thriller at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern raced into a two goal lead only to be pegged back by the early stages of he second half, and the game could have gone either way until Kimmich popped up on 82 minutes to end BVB’s hopes. With neither team having a perfect start to the season, DFL Super Cup: Bayern vs BVB was a chance for each side to grab a psychological advantage and Hansi Flick’s Bayern did just that after a hard fought clash.
Die Bayern picked up their first silverware of the new campaign with a 2-1 extra time victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup and they were at odds of 1.50, here at SBOTOP, to double their trophy tally with a win in 90 minutes. Meanwhile Lucien Favre’s Dortmund arrived on the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat in Augsburg and were desperate to avoid another bad result tonight.
Both sides fielded strong sides and each head coach can take plenty of positives, but the prize goes to Bayern and the trophy cabinet at the Allianz is getting a little cramped!
Highlights of the game
Flick’s men got into their stride quickly and forced a good save from Marwin Hitz with just ten minutes on the clock. The Bundesliga’s most prolific assist maker, Thomas Muller, fired in a superb cross for Joshua Kimmich to meet with a powerful header which the BVB keeper kept out of the top corner.
At the other end of the pitch Erling Haaland did well to create a chance for Marco Reus but his shot was charged down. But the underdogs couldn’t keep Bayern out for long, and when Robert Lewandowski crossed into the danger area Corentin Tolisso converted at the second attempt.
Borussia fought back again and Julian Brandt teed up Mahmoud Dahoud, but his long range effort sailed over the bar. And as the game swung from end to end Hitz was alert to tip over an effort from Kimmich after good work from Tolisso. But there was little the BVB keeper could do when Bayern doubled their lead on the half hour. Kimmich won a free-kick on the right wing and when the cross was sent over Muller rose highest to head home from close range.
The pre-match Bayern vs BVB betting odds had Dortmund at odds of 4.85 to win in normal time, and at 2-0 the odds had stretched almost out of sight, but a goal for die Schwarzgelben just before the break dragged them back into the match. Haaland was the provider and Brandt the beneficiary as he smashed his shot into the roof of the net to keep the game alive.
The goal lifted Dortmund and they came out for the second half hungry for more goals, Thomas Meunier taking a pot shot which flew just wide. And, on 55 minutes they were level when Haaland seized his chance to fire home from the centre of the penalty area.
Game on!
As the match wore on Bayern began to look the stronger and Alphonso Davies took aim from just outside the penalty area but his shot flew just wide. And then the winner came, with less than ten minutes on the clock, it was Kimmich slotting the ball beyond Hitz after a lightening fast Bayern break to grab more silverware to take home to Bavaria.
Key statistics
At half time the Bavarians looked comfortable, having enjoyed 57 per cent of the ball and they had five shots on target to Dortmund’s two. But a goal just before the break brought BVB right back into the game.
By the end of the 90 minutes Bayern had seven shots on target to Borussia’s four and that was enough to take the Bundesliga champions through.
This win for Bayern stretches their head to head advantage in the Bayern vs BVB results to 38 victories to Borussia’s 19.
What’s next?
Having surrendered their winning streak in a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Hoffenheim, FC Bayern have a chance to get back on track in the Bundesliga with a game against Hertha at the Allianz Arena on Sunday. The Berlin side has started with a win and a defeat, beating Werder Bremen 4-1 before losing at home to Eintracht.
