DFL Supercup: Bayern Plan to Kick Off Post-Lewandowski Era With Silverware

RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich

It’s the dawn of a new era for Bayern Munich as wantaway star Robert Lewandowski has already left town.  With the Pole leaving for Camp Nou after a long standoff, both parties can now move on and look forward for the 2022/23 campaign.

But before they’ll commence their Bundesliga title defence for the 10th consecutive time, the new-look Bavarians’ first challenge is to face RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup Final on July 31.

The DFL Supercup is a one-off match, which is basically the equivalent of the Community Shield at England, where the winners of the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal from last season go head-to-head.

Bayern Munich are unsurprisingly the winningest team in this competition with nine trophies, but RB Leipzig are no pushovers and they’ll be gunning for the major upset.

Talking Points

Bayern Munich to parade their newest acquisitions

The Bavarians’ biggest additions so far this summer are Sadio Mane and Matthijs de Ligt, and both of these standouts can prove their worth here in the DFL Supercup Final.

So what will Sadio Mane bring to Bayern Munich? He certainly adds a different dynamic for them, and although he isn’t as prolific as Lewandowski scoring-wise, the former Liverpool star can produce through his electric pace and mesmerising dribbling.

Just imagine once he links up with Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry up front. That would surely give opposing defences nightmares since they’ll be running circles around them.

Meanwhile, de Ligt just became the second Dutchman (and fourth signing overall) to join Bayern Munich this offseason after Ryan Gravenberch. The 22-year-old centre-back was bought for a fee of €80-M to Juventus.

Other than Bayern Munich, de Ligt was also heavily linked to Chelsea since he was seen as a suitable replacement for Antonio Rudiger, who left for Real Madrid on a free earlier this summer. He will surely play a key role in Bayern Munich’s defence for years to come.

In other news, Bayern Munich will miss Leon Goretzka’s services since he’s still recovering from his knee surgery on Monday. He’s expected to be out for around four to six weeks, leaving Julian Nagelsmann short of midfield options for the early part of the 2022/23 season.

RB Leipzig gunning for their second trophy in franchise history

After winning the DFB-Pokal last term, RB Leipzig’s confidence is high and they’ve carried over their solid form thus far in pre-season when they beat Southampton on Saturday with a score of 3-1.

Angelino, Emil Forsberg, and Ilaix Moriba all scored vs. the Saints and they’ll look to shine once more for Domenico Tedesco’s side in this upcoming final.

Other than those three, Bayern Munich will have their hands full in trying to keep the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Andre Silva, Dominik Szoboszlai, Konrad Laimer, and Yussuf Poulsen at bay. And RB Leipzig have a strong backline too, which is manned by Willi Orban, Lukas Klostermann, and Josko Gvardiol.

Another trophy for the Red Bulls should help them in changing perceptions about themselves as a club and as an entity since they’re continuously aiming to further close the gap to the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

History

The DFL Supercup was established in 1987 where Bayern Munich won their first after beating Hamburger SV 2-1 in the final.

Since then, the Bavarians have won eight more – including five in the last six years. In stark contrast, this will be RB Leipzig’s first-ever DFL Supercup Final.

Furthermore, Borussia Dortmund are the second winningest team with six and they’re the last club to beat Bayern Munich in this competition, which happened in 2019 with a score of 2-0.

Last season, Bayern Munich achieved a league double over RB Leipzig with an aggregate tally of 7-3.

The Red Bulls have yet to beat the Bavarians for the second time ever since their 2-1 home triumph on Matchday 27 of the 2017/18 season when they were still coached by current Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Betting Tip

Bayern Munich are backed by the SBOTOP DFL Supercup 2022 odds to win on July 31. They are priced at 1.91, while a victory for RB Leipzig is installed at 3.45 and a draw after 90 minutes is at 3.75 in the 1×2 market.

Both teams weren’t gun-shy in their two encounters last season and we anticipate more of the same for this upcoming final.

So regardless of who wins, we’re expecting numerous DFL Supercup 2022 highlights to come our way – making Over 1.50 @ 2.28 our recommended bet.
