Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich
Germany’s two biggest teams come head-to-head this weekend in the DFL Supercup, and it’s a chance for both to draw first blood at the start if a new 10-month-long battle.
FC Bayern against Borussia Dortmund is the German version of El Clasico and this meeting at the Signal Iduna Park is the best curtain-raiser the Bundesliga could have hoped for.
Lucien Favre’s BVB will be keen to make a statement against the reigning champions. The pre-season SBOBET odds predict another Bavarian title, but a fast start for Die Schwarzgelben could change all that.
Talking Points
BVB Spending Big
There’s absolutely no doubt that everyone at the Signal Iduna Park is determined to go one step further than last season, when they pushed FC Bayern all the way, having led the Bundesliga table for most of the campaign.
Die Schwarzgelben have invested heavily to add to an already star-studded squad. Skipper Marco Reus and midfield star Jadon Sancho featured at the top of the goals and assists charts for much of last season and there’s no reason to expect them to fall away this time.
Reus is hoping to return the Bundesliga title to Borussia and he will be delighted by the board’s show of intent, backing Lucien Favre with a 130 million Euro war chest.
Thorgan Hazard’s move from Borussia Monchengladbach has been completed and Julian Brandt has arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, while Paco Alcacer has made his move from Barcelona permanent in a 21 million Euro switch.
Alcacer is targeting more starts this season, having made just 15 last term. He broke the Bundesliga record for the most goals scored by a substitute and surely that’s a compelling argument to put to head coach Favre.
With an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal, Favre has also moved to bolster his defence, signing German international wing-back Nico Schulz and former Bayern centre-back Mats Hummels.
Fans in the fabled Yellow Wall will hope this strengthened squad will be good enough to break Bayern’s seven-year stranglehold on the league title.
Bayern in transition
This could be BVB’s best chance of loosening the Bavarians’ grip, with the reigning champions having rather less success in the transfer market so far this summer.
Head coach Niko Kovac has strengthened his defence with the recruitment of French World Cup winners Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.
But Bayern have lost the services of wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, and are yet to find a replacement for either, with approaches to Manchester City for £90m-rated Leroy Sane yet to bear any fruit.
An understrength Bayern managed to beat AC Milan 1-0 in the ICC Cup recently, thanks to a Leon Goretzka goal in first-half stoppage time. And, of course, prolific striker Robert Lewandowski will once again take some stopping. He is the top Supercup scorer of all-time with five goals, and I wouldn’t bet against him adding another on Saturday.
This is a team in transition but underestimate FC Bayern at your peril!
History
First played in 1987, the DFL Supercup pits the Bundesliga champions against the winners of the DFB-Pokal, and if one team does the double, then the second-place Bundesliga side steps in.
Over the past ten years (including 2019) one of either FC Bayern or BVB has been in the Supercup. In fact, the Bavarians have featured in all but one, winning five in this decade so far.
Meanwhile, this is BVB’s seventh appearance since 2010, and they have won two, both against Bayern. The head to heads are 3-2 in Bayern’s favour though and the Yellow Wall will do it’s utmost to level things up. The DFL Supercup 2019 news will feature familiar names again, but who will come out on top?
Either way, BVB can’t make many inroads into the total head to heads, having won just 18 of the last 69 meetings with FC Bayern coming out on top 35 times.
Last season, FC Bayern spanked Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 in the Supercup, Lewandowski scoring a hat-trick, but then had a stuttering start to their league campaign.
Betting Tip
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich | Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap 0.00 @ 2.49 | |
August 04, 02:30 (GMT+8) |
The DFL Supercup 2019 betting odds see a close game with all three results in play. The reigning league champions are favourites at 2.15, with the hosts at 3.10 and the draw at 3.40.
Home advantage could be a telling factor, particularly with the Yellow Wall welcoming a new array of stars to join the likes of Reus and Sancho. 1-1 is the most likely scoreline at
6.20, but a longer shot on a 2-1 home win at odds of 11.00 could be the value.
