Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg
If you have been following the Bundesliga for the past couple of years, you understand just how big of a lead Bayern Munich have established over the past couple of years. They have always been the undefeatable kings of the German top flight, and it seemed for a while that it will take a decade and a half before they are even unseated from their lofty perch.
However, it seems like the football gods have decided to rock the boat and give the defending champions a bit of a challenge. The Bundesliga 2018 results have been quite a shock for the neutral football fan as it is not the Bavarians who are atop the table.
Borussia Dortmund find themselves at the top of the German top flight Bundesliga after Bayern Munich suffered a shock defeat to Hertha Berlin. This is the best chance for Lucien Favre’s brilliant boys to build on their good fortune and establish some breathing room between them and the defending champions.
However, their next opponents will not be the easiest ones to face. Augsburg are playing some spectacular football and will be a tough challenge for the current league leaders.
Talking Points
It’s hard to find any faults with the way The BVB have been playing as of late. They are playing some fantastic attacking football under Favre while also keeping their defence as solid as ever. There’s no better year for Dortmund to break the monotony of German football than this year.

Of course, those two aren’t the only stars that Manuel Baum has to worry about. He fortunate enough that explosive winger Christian Pulisic won’t be playing due to his torn calf. However, with players like Lukasz Piszczek, Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji and Jadon Sancho getting fantastic ratings, there’s no question that the hosts will be giving his Fuggerstadt a tough time.
However, it isn’t like everything will be gloomy for Augsburg. While they did suffer a rough patch after their opening victory against Dusseldorf, the club has somewhat found their form. The most impressive result in their season so far is their 1-1 draw against an insanely strong Bayern Munich team at the Allianz Arena.
The following fixture after that was even more encouraging. Alfred Finnbogason, their Icelandic talisman, pulled off an impressive hat-trick to beat a hapless Freiburg on his return to Bundesliga action this season. The way he dominated the Freiburg defence didn’t seem like he was sidelined with a knee injury at all.
Of course, they should not just merely count on their forward to get them through the match. If Michael Gregoritsch and the rest of the midfield can supply their striker with decent passes while the Andreas Luthe-led defence manages to hold the BVB, we could be in for an interesting match.
History
These two teams haven’t played each other much if we put them side by side with the other rivalries they’ve had, but the head-to-head offers a rather lopsided advantage towards the hosts.
Dortmund won nine of the 15 games they have played, the first of which was a 4-0 thrashing of Augsburg in October 2011. While Augsburg managed to pull off a miraculous 0-1 giant-killing in February 2015, it’s pretty much assured that Dortmund have always had Augsburg’s number.
However, three of the last six games the two sides have played all ended in a draw, including the latest one they played at Signal Iduna Park last season. A draw is pretty much on the cards, and Augsburg could definitely pull that off.

The Bundesliga 2018 odds are tilted towards the hosts, and I don’t see any reason not to believe the bookies.
I see Borussia Dortmund overpowering their guests and getting by with a sizeable victory here. They are the best attacking side in the Bundesliga this season, and I don’t think Augsburg have enough quality defenders and midfielders to stop the BVB.
However, I do think that Alred Finnbogason’s hat-trick is not something that can easily be quenched, and I think he’ll be able to score a brace at most. I still think the BVB will be able to dominate them, and a three-goal outing from Marco Reus and company is not that exaggerated of an expectation.
