Crystal Palace vs Hull City
If all goes to plan for Chelsea on Saturday, the Blues’ Premier League celebrations will reverberate around West London throughout the weekend.
But there are still scores to be settled right down the league table, with the tensest football games at the bottom, where defeat means financial disaster. Crystal Palace take on Hull City on Sunday in a game the Tigers simply must win. Betting websites have had Hull as certs for relegation throughout the season, with a brief interlude, for a week or so, when betting odds were actually against the Tigers sinking.
That’s down to a remarkable recovery engineered by Marco Silva, but the stark reality remains; he inherited a bottom three side which, with two games to go, languishes where he found it. Silva recruited well in January, and in Kamil Grosicki he has a winger to unlock any defence. Wing back Andrew Robertson is emerging as an attacking threat too.
But they’ll have their work cut out against an angry Palace defence which has conceded seven in two defeats to Burnley and Manchester City. Big Sam Allardyce, who has never been relegated from the Premier League as a boss, will surely have his rearguard well organised.
The Palace recovery, including shock wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, has been down to the inspired loan signing of defender Mamadou Sakho, favourite to win the Eagles’ player of the year, despite arriving in January.
Christian Benteke, with 14 goals, and Wilfried Zaha, if he can stay on his feet, may have too much for the Hull defence in a game Big Sam is targeting for safety: “I definitely want to win this one,” he says. “There’s no way I want to rely on others slipping up to keep us safe. It’s our responsibility.”
