Euro 2020: France’s Revenge Tour Starts Here

France vs Switzerland

France aim to assert their dominance over Switzerland as they lock horns in Bucharest at the Euro 2020 Round of 16.

Les Bleus have never been defeated by the Swiss in a competitive fixture, but that fact will be put to the side since anything can happen in the knockout stages.

The 2018 World Cup champions finished first in Group F despite winning only once in their three group stage fixtures. Meanwhile, Switzerland have qualified after grabbing the third spot in Group A.

Didier Deschamps’ men are certainly looking for retribution after losing in the Euro 2016 final against Portugal. So it will be important for them not only to win this one, but to gather significant momentum as well.

As for Vladimir Petkovic’s side, they are more than happy to be in this position after almost missing out and they’ll look to punch above their weight.

The winner of this tie will play Croatia or Spain in the quarterfinals in Saint Petersburg, Russia on July 2nd . And here at SBOTOP, we can’t wait to kick off the Final 16 festivities.

Talking Points

France’s vaunted offence has yet to click

With all of the attacking pieces that they have in their lineup, you would’ve thought that the Frenchmen have the most goals so far in this tournament.

However, as of this writing, France have only scored four goals — which is level with the likes of Switzerland, Austria, Ukraine, Croatia, and Sweden — and they’ve conceded three in the process.

Les Bleus may have had a rough time in the Group of Death but they weathered the storm as they’ve gone undefeated in the group stages.

They started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Germany, but they were pushed to the limit in their draws against Portugal and Hungary.

France’s draw against Portugal is easily one of the classics here in this tournament as we’ve been treated to goals from two former Real Madrid teammates.

The Euro 2020 highlights saw Karim Benzema go toe-to-toe against Cristiano Ronaldo and they finished the game with a brace each.

Benzema finally scored his first international goals since rejoining Les Bleus after a half-decade hiatus and he’ll be tasked to offer the same threat moving forward.

Kylian Mbappe has yet to open his account here in the Euros, while Antoine Griezmann will aim for more for their pursuit of another trophy.

On the bench, Deschamps has options with the presence of Olivier Giroud, Kingsley Coman, Wissam Ben Yedder, and Moussa Sissoko. He just needs to find the right combination to unlock their full potential.

Switzerland pose an intriguing challenge for Les Bleus

After failing to win in their first two games in the Euros. Switzerland have regained their confidence and they’re ready to play the role as spoilers versus France.

All hope was lost when they were whipped by Italy in the second game. However, they were able to turn things around against Turkey.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Haris Seferovic set the tone by putting in three goals, and that was enough for them to qualify in the knockouts.

Vladimir Petkovic’s side will continue to operate with their 3-4-1-2 formation with Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, and Remo Freuler holding it down in the middle.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s back three of Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, and Ricardo Rodriguez are going to have their hands full in trying to slow down France’s incisive attack.

History

Switzerland have a long way to go since they have yet to beat France in a competitive encounter.

After 32 friendlies from 1905 to 2003, the Swiss have recorded four draw and two losses against Les Bleus.

Their first competitive fixture happened in the Euro 2004 group stages where France won 3-1. Thierry Henry scored a brace and Zinedine Zidane added one while Switzerland’s Johan Vonlanthen scored the consolation goal.

Their most recent meeting came in the group stage of the Euro 2016 where both teams settled in a goalless draw.

The points shared at the time helped them move on to the knockout stages as France finished first in Group A with seven points, while Switzerland were at second with five.
