Three struggling teams in the German top flight handed three title chasers some frustrating defeat to highlight the Matchday 20 football games.
Indeed, online betting did not expect Darmstadt, Hamburg and Bayer to win in their respective Bundesliga fixtures. However, the three more than proved this weekend that they aren’t teams to be counted out.
Mainz 05 2-0 FC Augsburg
Jhon Cordoba gave Augsburg all sorts of problems as he helped Mainz end their four-game winless streak. Cordoba was busy throughout, assisting Oztunali on the counter for the opener and drawing a penalty – which Jairo Samperio converted – for their second. Coach Martin Schmidt will also be happy with new signing Bojan adding energy to their attack.
Darmstadt 98 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
Bottom-team Darmstadt seized all the three points for the first time in four months, thanks to goals from Terrence Boyd and Antonio Colak. BVB’s Raphael Guerreiro canceled Boyd’s 21st-minute opener just before the break, but Colak came in as a substitute in the second and, less than 10 minutes later, fired home through a Sidney Sam assist.
If Darmstadt can retain their excellent form and build on the confidence they got in this game, it is possible that they can pull another upset against Hoffenheim where they are at Asian Handicap odds of +1.25 @ 1.89.
Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
Chicharito sparked Bayer’s demolition of the third-placed Frankfurt with his fifth Bundesliga brace. The Mexican striker put Bayer ahead in the opening five minutes before making any chance of an Eagles’ comeback impossible with a sensational volley just after the half-hour mark. Kevin Volland then put the game to rest 12 minutes before time.
RB Leipzig 0-3 Hamburger SV
In another surprising turn of events, Hamburg followed their win over Bayer last week with a three-goal humbling of title-hopefuls Leipzig. Kyriakos Papadopoulos punished his former team (again) with a bullet-header in the 18th minute, while fellow new signing Walace doubled the lead six minutes later. Aaron Hunt capped the night with his 50th Bundesliga goal to catapult the Red Shorts out of the bottom three.
With this convincing victory, odds also point Hamburg to continuously climb the table when they host Freiburg next week where they are tipped at -0.25 @ 1.82.
Ingolstadt 0-2 Bayern Munich
Ingolstadt appeared to have secured their first-ever point against Bayern Munich, but two goals scored at the death of time crushed the hopes of the fans at the Audi Sportpark. Arturo Vidal lurked behind the Ingolstadt defence and struck from close range in the 90th minute to break the deadlock, and Arjen Robben took advantage of the shock to add more misery to the home team.
It’s also a record for Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer who registered his 100th clean sheet in the league.
Werder Bremen 0-1 Borussia Monchengladbach
It’s three league wins on the bounce for Gladbach as they took down Bremen who, in turn, fell to 16th and in threat of relegation. Christoph Kramer teed up the unguarded Thorgan Hazard for their only goal of the game, though that was enough for them to take the win as both teams stood firm and struggled to score thereafter.
Schalke 04 2-0 Hertha BSC
Leon Goretzka was the hero of the match as he played a role in Schalke’s first goal and scored their second to overcome the Capital club that is eyeing the European places. Goretzka’s aggressiveness fueled the Royal Blues attack that saw Guido Burgstaller open the scoring. The 22-year-old midfielder’s efforts also paid off as he scored in the second half, launching an unstoppable shot after leaving his marker in the dust.
Wolfsburg 2-1 Hoffenheim
The Wolves came back from one-goal down to spoil Julian Nagelsmann’s first anniversary with Hoffenheim and hand them their second defeat of the season. Steven Zuber’s clean finish on 26 minutes gave the away outfit the lead, but two second-half goals – a beautiful volley from Maximilian Arnold and a close range finish from Daniel Didavi – pushed Wolfsburg up front.
SC Freiburg 2-1 FC Koln
Vincenzo Grifo delivered once again as Freiburg repulsed the Billy Goats at the Schwarzwald-Stadion. Grifo scored Freiburg’s opening goal and, after Anthony Modeste levelled matters for the visitors, set up Maximilian Philipp for the easy tap-in. With the win, Christian Streich’s men are now only three points adrift of Koln and still in contention for the European spots.
